Intel's new 32/64-bit Xeon-class CPU / Nocona

Intel is not willing to lag behind AMD in 64-bit CPU wars.

New 64-bit CPU architecture, diff from Itanium1/2 and AMD's Optron.
Support PCI Express, DDR2, faster FSB, better power management, and SSE3 instructions set.
Cheaper then Itanium 2 (64-bit), for entry level server/workstation.

O/S will definitely support it.

Soon when the OS become native 64 bit. This is get popular. It is like how in 95 we saw a change from 16 bit to 32 bit computing.
As of now the AMD 64 is the most popular and is surely good when it comes to performance.
Free BSD , Suse etc have support for it too...

AMD64 CPU's support all of the above and also run 32-bit code.

The coolest things to me about the AMD64 CPU's are:

- Memory controller built-in to CPU.
- Full-speed front side bus (same speed as CPU).
- Totally ownz Intel chips 1GHz faster and with double the cache.

I'm sure in the next iterations of AMD's CPU's, they'll incorporate the SSE3 instructions and have a few more frills to edge out Intel... again.

HP/Compaq will soon begin selling AMD Athlon 64 (FX) and Opteron systems, so Intel's already lost the short-term battle.

Btw... a car costs less than an Itanium 2 system, so that's not a real bragging point. :p

Right now its pretty much pointless to move to an opteron, because now they are about to release the next generation, that is not compatible with the current chips. (903 pins to 902) These chips are supposed to be much quicker, and will surely beat the pants off of intels crap.

I'm not exactly sure, but I think the current AMD64 CPU's only do DDR333 (PC2700), and the newer ones should natively support DDR400 (PC3200) via their on-board MCH. In either case, I believe it's possible for mobo manufacturers to use an external MCH (correct me if I'm wrong).
