java WEB-INF locations (gigabean)

Hello,

I was wondering if there were any other users out there using the JSP portion of the gigabean.com's web hosting package. I have recently signed up with them and have had a great experience so far.

I just started using JSP and was having trouble with package imports which possibly is a result of placing my .class files in the wrong location. I confirmed with Curtis that my WEB-INF directory should be located in the same directory that contains the "public-html directory". I've tried putting .class files into the "classes" directory, .jar files into the "lib" directory and they all can't seen to find the requested import package.

Also I was wondering if .class files are installed, does the server need to be bounced?

If anybody has had any experience with gigabean jsp or any other host that might be similar, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Steve

I'm not familiar with gigabean but, depending on the version of Tomcat they are using and the Tomcat configuration, you may have to do something manually to have the servlet engine see the new jars or a brand new classes directory.

In Tomcat 4.x and 5.x many ISP's provide you with the /manager webapp to allow you to stop and start your webapps on your own. I used to host with a company that only had Tomcat 3 and that actually required a full restart of Tomcat for it to work. They had a little script that, if somebody requested it, restarted Tomcat on the half hour. Debugging was a total bear with the potential for a half-hour lag time to see if a fix worked.

Check with gigabean and see if they have Tomcat set to automatically see changes. This would be if the "autoDeploy" setting for the Host element is set to true. The disadvantage of this setting is that it can cause a performance hit as Tomcat has to see if anything has changed since the last time for every request.
