Hello friends,

After a lot of search, i decided on catalog.com as my new server provider. Does anybody have any experience (good or bad) with them ? Do you think they are good ?

Also just wanted to know one thing :
For giving telnet access, does the domain need to have a dedicated unique IP ? or it can also work on simple domain allocation as well.

Thanx in advance for your suggestions

in the top right is a search botton for this forum. Feel free to use it to search on Catolog.com. There have been some discussions on it already.

Catalog seems like a great company. I don't have any personal experience but they have frequented this board in the past and asked for suggestions, WHICH they actually implemented.

As for your telnet question, NO you do not need a unique ip to provide telnet access to each client. What's important when logging in through telnet or ssh is the username. I have 75 ip addresses on my server and I could use any one of them to telnet into the same account. You will be brought to the user's home directory regardless of the ip you use to connect to the server.

Well so far they've been quite helpful in answering questions I've had... I'm planning on ordering a linux server from them tomarrow(10/11/2000) so I'll be glad to tell you how things end up working out...

Support response

I got a dedicated Linux server from them a little over a week ago, and have had a number of questions getting setup initially. So far I haven't gotten a single response to ANY of the 4-5 Emails I've sent to their tech support. I find that very disturbing. On the other hand, when I finally call them directly, I get good helpful phone support. Go figure!

DNS hasn't propogated yet, so I can't judge the server uptime, speed, etc. yet....

Update for anyone that cares to hear.

I placed my order and they were quite helpful...even 2 days after i placed the order when I contacted them about the possiblility of installing redhat 7.0 instead of 6.2 they had no problem and installed it free of charge. The connection is fast, getting sustained download/upload rates in the 400KiloByte range (which if my calculations are right is around the 3megabit range aka twice the speed of a t1)!

I haven't contacted them since then as I've had no need so I can't really speak for how well post-order service is but so far with pre-order replies have been extrememly fast, with most replies coming back in under 10 minutes.

So just thought I'd tell everyone about my experiance...

Dexter & all!

I am into my 2nd week with catalog.com .. initially ordered a RAQ3 with 256Mb & 100Gb throughput .. it was a nightmare .. server response was often 750mS .. sometimes I couldnt even access (I am in the UK) .. tracked the bottleneck to C&W NJ .. got it fixed & at the same time I ditched the RAQ3 .. software was all out of date (RH 5) & if you wanted to u/g you had to do it ONLY via GUI & with Cobalt approved "upgrades".. a real scam! I hated it! So I got back onto their senior management & changed to a Celeron 500 256Mb 20Gb 100Gb throughput but with Plesk; and I have to say (apart from Plesk not supporting auto-responders!!) I love it! It flys when compared to the RAQ3 .. tech support .. well I have always got replies (some info supplied was duff!) but generally I have to say that I find them very obliging.

We had real problems (& I mean REAL problems) trying to get vBulletin Lite installed (on the RAQ3) .. got it up & running OK on the Red Hat Box.

You mentioned that you have got RH v7 .. is it that different? Do you think I should get mine v6.2 upgraded?? I only got my Linux box two days ago.

I am having BIG problems getting auto-responders setup using Qmail .. can you help or throw any light on this subject?? I am currently with Dialtone & have got over 250 domains to move to the Plesk box!! Many users must have auto-responders!!

Cheers

I didn't know that it was even possible to have problems installing vBull lite. I know you don't like RaQ's but I happen to have one and installed vBull lite on it in less than 4 minutes. It was the most wonderful thing I've ever experienced. I can assure you, that whatever problems you had were not due to the RaQ.

I must say though that my views of plesk are only marred by the license fee and if there were no license fee (if it came installed on a server that I was leasing), I'd rather have it. I have a second server (nothing, and I mean nothing, is installed on it), and am interested in putting something like plesk on it. I think I might just sell it, and lease one that is ready to go. Hmmm.

well first plesk won't run in rh7 and second unless you don't need any custom work, you'd better be a real linux hacker... Turns out rh 7 comes with an experimental version of the c++ compiler and getting some of the software compiled like the IRC services(nameserv, memoserv, chanserv) aren't working out too well.

Also they pretty much did a basic install of rh7 as mysql, php, bind/dns, and most of the other software wasn't even installed... Lucky my partner is skilled at this stuff and is working on setting everything up right now.

so my adivce stick with 6.2 and plesk cuase otherwise it's going to be a nightmare...
