Not Another Reseller! Where Are The Serious Hosts?!
It seems like everywhere I look for hosting the options are nothing but resellers. I'm sure there are some quality resellers out there, but knowing that the host I'm working with has physical access to their servers means a lot to me. Paying someone for hosting who's paying someone else to manage their servers has proved to be nothing but problematic for me.
So where are the hosts with their own NOCs? The few big ones out there (Pair, DreamHost) are a little too big; they either don't offer the services I want or their support is lacking.
Hosts with the usual cPanel configuration are a dime a dozen, and that works well enough. But I also need SSH access, IMAP+SSL, SMTP+SSL, ultra-current versions of PHP and MySQL, XML libraries installed, and a few other oddities.
Is there a host out there any of you have worked with that offers these features and is working out of their own NOC? Thanks (and I really don't mean to step on any reseller's toes, I've just had a few lousy experiences).

Resellers can be just as good as the real thing. Some of them have they're own dedicated server and will try and satisify your needs.

Try to go with a host that has atleast 5-10 servers. A host having their own DC would make your choices very limited IMHO.

Good evening everyone,
al3x, have you considered getting a server from a reliable hosting company like Rackspace and doing the administration of the servers on your own? You can always hire a company to do the administration of the server for you as well.

those are standard features, most host companies will be able to help you with.

@dprovenger: Yes, I've considered as much, but both cost and time are prohibitive in this respect.
Everyone else: I'd appreciate if those of you suggesting that resellers can be good too would suggest some of those resellers. I'm sure there are some good ones out there, so I'd like to hear about them. Customers only, please.
I'm aware that only choosing from hosts with their own NOC/DC narrows my options, but I'm hoping there's an option there that works for me.

So if you have your own rack and equipment you are still a reseller because you don't have your own NOC?
My apologies if I have misread the thread.

How about FutureQuest? Not huge but not tiny, and run their own DC.

Having physical access to servers and running a datacenter are two different things. Having physical access to servers means you (most likely) colocate in a nearby datacenter. Running your own datacenter is entirely different.
IMHO (and this is coming from the perspective of someone who watched a lot of datacenter startups a few years back) the companies that run datacenters should not be the ones offering virtual hosting. Those are two very different markets. Why would a company want to bother with $10/month accounts when they can score $10,000 a month or $100,000 a month accounts? I say -- let your colo customers do the virtual hosting, and you stick to the big guns. That way your customers don't feel like they are competing against their provider.
If you want to look for a company that runs their own datacenter, that's okay. However, bear in mind that companies that run their own datacenters and offer virtual hosting often have higher cost burdens, as well as poorer infrastructure, than those that colocate or lease dedicateds. I've seen a lot of providers that run their own datacenters go out of business because they couldn't handle the costs involved. Make sure to keep that in mind as you're shopping around, and don't rule out those with a solid investment in colocation or dedicated servers, either.

If you're only looking at companies with their own datacenter, you'll find your options are limited.
Many resellers will offer you a more personalised service, hell if we didn't host some of our resellers I'd sign up with them!!
