Unhappy with unhappy business

Well...
upgrade RH to Fedora with YUM
and recompile Kernel

Reboot..BOO BOO............cannot mount harddisk...........

Now...so we start all overagan with backup harddisk...and other stuff...
well end of this now....................

Now downtime is horrible...nearly 1 day now...
What should I do to cheer the customers up..coz my business has a lot of bad rumours of being down all the time.

One said.....give 10% discount on the next year purchase.
One said..... give more webspace and mysql
One said..... don't do anything...coz we did a lot of stuff already

So what you think?

The most important thing to give clients is Information. most people will understand if they are told what's going on , it's when webhost don't tell the clients or worse still they lie.

Promise you'll test major upgrades on a non-production server first in the future.

Every host should have that posted on their wall, in HUGE BOLD PRINT!

Yup, prior to any updates (minor or major) give your customers a lot of advance notice so they know what is happening. Keep them inform at every step of the way if it steer beyond the planned down time.

Like the rest said, test test test before putting it on a production server. Isn't going to Fedora a step backwards ? As far as I understand, Fedora will EOL every 3 to 4 months making it a perpetual beta version. Not something I would ever consider for a production server and much less with real paying customers on it.

It is not your customers' fault that you are facing this issue. You were the one who brought it on them. Anything from a month to three months off would be in order. Depending on how long it takes.

Indeed.

That's rule number one of major upgrades.
