Starting From Scratch

I used to run a webhosting business that was fully setup (almost) and very expensive. When I say fully setup I mean, all servers and so on were preinstalled on the server by the Data center I had purchased from.

I am trying to get back into the game but this time I'm starting from scratch. I have bought myself a dedicated 8MBPS line for my server so I should have plenty of bandwidth for it, and I have also made myself a nice little machine to run all the server software. I have installed Mandrake Linux 9.1 on it for the OS for simply 3 reasons,

1. The DVD came with all the server software that I should require.

2. It was quick and easy to install

3. Its the only one I could get my hands on.

Setting it up however is proving to be quite difficult. I am not really very well versed in this sort of thing and there dont seem to be many good and non-long/dismal documents on the whole idea of setting it up.

I'm looking for an expert (Someone who knows exactly what they're doing) to help me set up my server. Be it a step by step instruction made over MSN/AIM or some actual hands on help that means access to the Webmin and maybe a remote session with the machine.

I would like the following done so I would need the assisitance setting up:

1.The Apache web server to show and index directory.

2.Setup a DNS server so I can point domains at sertain users public_html directory.

3. Setting up other servers that I would like up but arnt really nessasary(Number 3 is a luxury, not a nesesaty).

If anyone can help, I'de be very happy, obviously I'de like to pay who ever helps me out in some fasion but I'm not sure how I would do so.

Any way if youre interested my e-mail is Randvegeta@hotmail.com, my AIM is Randvegeta2 and I'll be checking back on this page once in a while to see what you guys have posted.

Thanx in advance!

Randvegeta

I don't mean to sound rude or anything, but honestly you probably shouldn't be running a web hosting company ... you don't sound like you're very organized, or have the knowledge it takes to run this type of business.

If you can't configure this stuff yourself, how are you going to be able to support your customers when they have questions you can't answer? These are VERY simple questions you've asked, and your customers are going to hit you with much harder ones.

Hmmm.

8Mbps is a _ton_ of bandwidth for a company that is just starting out. That's about 3TB of transfer a month.

Perhaps it would have been simpler starting off with a reseller account, just to get your head back into the host space. Then move up to a managed dedicated server with WHM/CPanel on it. And _then_ move up to your own colocated server.

Notwithstanding that, if you're requesting work done this should probably go in the requests forum since the people who probably want to respond can't advertise themselves here.

Finally, since I've given all this free advice that you probably don't want to hear anyway, search for the likes of wemanageservers on the forum. They may be able to help.
