My opinion, stop reading right now if you don't want to hear it
---------------------------------------------------------------
I'm sorry, but I don't understand why people would like to make the same sort of website that there are already so many of. I mean WHT is an extremely good, big, active forum. There are good mods, good layout, nice speed... There is tons of knowledge here and more activity, history.... Why start up another WHT while there are many like it that are already good enough? You'll have to start at 0 posts, and that personally turns me off at the beginning, cause there is no point posting if no one else is going to read it. If your gonna start up another hosting forum, at least give it a twist, like freewebspace.net is about free web hosting mainly... yourhostsucks.com is mostly about hosts that suck..

Alright, thats enough rant

End Opinion

Well; I'm surprised to see such an idea; Actually I am thinking of fresh new forum not another WHT; It will be like WHT in the sense it targets the same audience.

World will never move forward if people listen to this type of ideas

"fresh new forum not another WHT"... "it targets the same audience"

If it is the same audience, what will your idea offer which WHT does not?

I'm not attacking anybody; But nothing is perfect as it is with WHT; BTW no one can assure one to one mapping with the audience of WHT & WHT itself.

Hope this will clear it up;

Nirmani is right when he says that nothing is perfect... WHT has it's flaws - it can occasionally be slow to load, sometimes it seems just TOO big! (in that, it's hard to keep up with all the posts, etc.) However, it is one of the best forums that I've found in 2001!

If you are aiming for the same audience as WHT then you will obviously struggle, even if it's for a slightly different subject. One way of looking at it is this... say Ford launched a 4x4 in 1999 aimed at off-roaders. If General Motors came forward in 2001 with another 4x4 that was targeted at the same people then obviously their sales would be reduced, becuase the people who bought their's in 1999 wouldn't suddenly rush out to buy the GM 4x4 just because it's there. You would need to show that your forum was significantly better, faster, more added useful features, with a more intelligent poster (and all of that would be difficult).

However, everyone needs to start somewhere, so good luck with any venture!

Its kinda like this:

What if the programmers of Linux in the 1990's and late 80's decided that they wouldnt create another operating system because Microsoft was soooo huge. What if they said, we will never be seen, never be heard. What if the programmers of all other operating systems said that? What if the Sun people decided that they wouldnt be different and program their own operating system? Then, we would all be running crappy Windows Xp or 98 and hating life.

Sometimes, improving on one thing can lead to great things. Sometimes, improving on a idea can turn out to be the best thing ever.

Think of it that way.

Jim

I think by 'same audience' he meant people who use web hosts, nto the exact same audience (as in trying to get members from here, which simply we won't allow anyway).

Let's face it, there are zillions of people who use hosting services. I've run across forums that seem to cover about the same thing, different crowd. Not bad, just not home

Starting a board from 0 posts ain't easy though...

Seems that's about all these .info domains are out there for.
For people to buy and offer to sell, cybersquatters, etc.

No offense as it's still too early to tell, but I really don't think there's going to be a second gold rush with the advent of .info. I think it's all just fools gold now.

I just hate cybersquatters in general. I had in mind a very good idea for a design and I found a very good domain... next day I returned to register it only to find that someone had attained it. Now, if this had been a company or an individual who was actually going to use it then I wouldn't be annoyed, I would just curse my stupidity for not buying it immediately - however, it's one of these domain resellers. They're asking $2500 for it.

Scum. I hope everyone who has rushed out to buy .info domains just to resell will fail miserably, along with all of those who will do the same for .biz domains.

I wonder if the regestrars could put in thier rules that domains which are put up for sale within x months of regestring should be sold for the reg costs max?

Maby an idea..

Douglas

I was actually discussing this matter on another thread in another forum. I brought up a very similar idea, but unfortunately I doubt whether the registrars care about cybersquatting - they make money out of them. If they had to implement some sort of policing of domains then the cost for registrations would inevitably rise... it's sad, but true
