dedicated streaming server

We have a site where we offer media (movies, videos, all from asian countires and copyrighted). when we started we did not knowwhat to expect as it was plain hobby and started with ev1servers.net with win 2003 server 700GB. We tried FDCservers.net (they suck big time, fromsales to billings). Anyways, at this time I bought Toal control server from planet.com ( server matrix guys) with 2000GB permonth connection.

What my usage is right now is even above 2000GB per month as I am streaming video . I thought about buying unlimited 10Mbps from different companies but on that my customer feel buffering at 10mbps. On 100mbps it is fine but cant find unlimitd deal.

Yesterday I heard that Cogent offer 100mbps connection with unlimited bandwidth per month for 1000 per month. Since they dont offer service where we live Cogent sales person refered me to Texas.net where Texas.net offer racks for servers and we choose our own company for data transfer.(like cogent).

I searched all over and this kind of deal is too good to be true . Who are cogent and are they any good before I buy.?What other hositing companies you recommend for my situation, where I am using awhole lot of bandwidth, over 2000 GB permonth.

Thanks.

Sam.

well there is nothing called unlimited the 10 Mb you are asking for is unmetered not unlimited which will hardly kick up to 3200 GB.

what i think you need to do is get some celarons from SM count each as 1000 GB, cluster them all and you can add as many as you want at a time and load balance them all i think that will work perfect for you.

on the other had you may try the unmetered server of gnax www.gnax.com they sell thru resellers and one of the best resellers of gnax is on this forum you might get a good deal from them.

I think for your type of usage Cogent will charge $3,000 a month for 100 meg line.

Talk to ndctech.com who is an HE Reseller and competes agressively on larger commits.

Actually, I was thinking... you said your estimated usage was 2000 Gb but need a 100mbps port. That's good enough with many providers as long as you don't get a 10mbps unmetered server... buy a 5mbps or higher commit on a 100mbps port and you are all set.

I would think the same thing. That deal is usually for offices.

The idea is you get a number of inexpensive servers and then you have your DNS configured to distribute people between these servers and you make it so that they all carry the same stream .
What streaming software are you using?

Yep, Cogent is $3,000 for any sort of hosting application. $1,000 is just for offices / internet access.

10Mbps unmetered wouldn't be a bad option, though you won't have much burst room.

You may want to look into 100mbps unmetered -- or simply pay for a few Mbps on 95% (as suggested by nipl) at a provider with low per-Mbps overage charges.

Good luck,
Russell

Cogent for streaming media, that just sounds like a dangerous idea to me. I mean if it works for you then I wish you the best of luck but I wouldn't do it.

Agreed :-). You want to make sure you have good bandwidth with good routes and low-latency. Intelligently-routed bandwidth would probably be best... either that or just choose some top-notich providers.
