Yep, people are howling on the CPanel.net forums.
Webmail still works, though, even if you have lost pop.

The POP problem is due to an improper rysnc with the MD5 lib. Do this and force a reinstall of cPanel. We had multiple problems with cPanel DDOS attack and it left a few servers non-functional. (There are other ways to do this but this is the fastest).
rm -f /usr/local/cpanel/cpanel
/scripts/upcp
This will reinstall cpanel and bring in the correct libs.Richard

I posted this in another forum:
From the cPanel forums:
http://forums.cpanel.net/showthread.php?threadid=19934
"cPanel 8.8 - STABLE update
For those of you having problems with the 8.8 STABLE update, you should remove /usr/local/cpanel/cpanel and run /scripts/upcp to force the update to happen again as some files probably did not download properly.
Our update servers are currently overloaded as we are experiencing a denial of service attack.
We are sorry for any inconvience this may have caused. We will be offering a free cPanel PRO license to anyone who is affected by this problem."

Looks like I'll have to set my Auto updates to STABLE releases to manual from now on. It was an ugly morning.

Of course that means having faith that the stable releases really are stable and tested.
As we learned today, that is apparently not the case.

This is the second update that broke major components in the last couple months. It's getting to the point where any existing vulnerabilities are likely less harmful than than the updates are...

You can also set your update to Release version and run Cpanel update. That's known to fix this issue as well. This problem seem to only occur in the stable version.
