Why is my machine so slow?
Does anyone know why my machine is so slow? The load average is high, but the CPU is mostly idle and "vmstat" doesn't show much swapping going on, so I'm at a loss to explain what's causing the high load average.
Code:
10:05am up 52 days, 9:08, 10 users, load average: 8.14, 6.94, 6.39
282 processes: 274 sleeping, 3 running, 1 zombie, 4 stopped
CPU states: 1.1% user, 4.3% system, 0.0% nice, 94.4% idle
Mem: 1031204K av, 1017924K used, 13280K free, 0K shrd, 65776K buff

It's slow at responding to my commands in the shell, as well as loading webpages on my forum.

You have a large number of processes running and 10 users online. Maybe they're doing something that's causing the load? Need to paste more of your TOP here.

I'd post a full ps, but my machine isn't heavily loaded right now. I'll wait until it's heavily loaded and then I'll capture a ps and post it here.

Swap: 1020116K av, 386212K used, 633904K free
ur cpu is 94% idle however u r using almost 400mb swap memory. u r either running out of memory or some process/user is eating it up.

But the "si" (swap in) and "so" (swap out) columns in vmstat were near zero, so wouldn't that mean it's not actually causing a problem?

Your machine has ran out of ram. You are using swap which is very inefficient. I recommend you upgrading your machine before you start swapping too badly (or rather it looks like you already have)

Okay, I caught my machine being slow. Here is a ps, top, free and vmstat 1:
http://lina.aaanime.net/~pmak/ps-2004-01-29.txt
Any suggestions? This time, the so seems high so maybe it is swapping that's killing me... getting a RAM upgrade isn't an option for me at this point though (unless I switch hosts; it's too expensive). Perhaps there's some performance tuning I could do?

you have a massive ammount of httpd processes, i suggest uppgrading your server
4:22pm up 52 days, 15:24, 11 users, load average: 6.75, 4.03, 2.77
have you updated ur kernel?

That would be my interpretation. Did anyone notice that several of the processes in "top" are in "D" status, and the "b" column of vmstat indicates lots of processes blocked on I/O? Since "si" and "so" are low, while "bi" and "bo" (block in and block out? Is this Linux?) are high, it suggests to me that the drive(s) are extremely busy and processes are waiting on that, possibly as a combination of heavy user disk activity and the swapping.
