Transferring domain names

Is it possible to transfer a domain name (say from ValuableHost to GoDaddy) without telling ValuableHost that I'm doing it? Can they refuse? My patience with VH has run out and I'm considering transferring my domain name away from them so that I can host my site with a friend.

Thanks

I think if you are the Administrative Contact of that domain you dont need to inform VH about the transfer.

as long as you can login and remove any registrar lock, and you are the admin contact and they dont NAK the trabsfer requests then yes.

Safest is to inform them you are transferring and unlock the domains and move en-masse.

As a *general* rule within the UK regisration companies auto-deny the transfer request copy that is sent to them blocking your transfer *unless* you have informed them first. Not sure if VH follow a similar process.

As othellotech said there must be no registrar lock and if you have the owner email everything should be fine.

How would you know if there's a registrar lock? (Have never heard this term before) I don't mean to/intend to hijack this thread, but my boyfriend is having problems getting his domain away from namezero.

Normally a whois search will state if registrar lock is on. This certainly works with Enom registered domains. Try the whois function at dnsstuff.com.

Hmm. Didn't mention anything about that, but we did find out that the name was cleverly transferred to network solutions (Gah!) without giving him login information or anything for their site. Yeesh. Thanks.

stodge: I transfered a domain away from them a while ago and it worked fine - so it should for you too!
