Just wondering - anyone on here know of any really good deals on wireless LAN kit - I need a base station and 1 or 2 PCMCIA cards. UK would be especially good

I want to set up a LAN at home, but don't want to lay any cable. I've seen a few kits around £250 (~$375) which is not exactly expensive but if anyone knows of any 'special deals' then I'd be very interested indeed.

If all you need is peer to peer, grab a couple Lucent cards and go for it. You don't really need an AP ( base station) . For net access set up one box as a router - Win2K or *nix does well.
We are a wireless ISP, among other things. I really like the Lucent cards because they work with every OS we run across easily.
The teletronics 2MB cards are also nice, linksys is so so in my book.

Not sure if the UK has any laws regarding wireless, might want to check.

Good source for cheap ones is ebay if they'll ship overseas. 80-100 US or less.
Don't have any spares or I'd offer you some.

The Apple Airport software will run a software Access Point on your Mac with either a Lucent PCMCIA card or the Apple card in newer models. This software access point can act as a DHCP server and client as well as both a NAT and Appletalk router. You connect your cable modem to the Ethernet port, and all your wireless devices can share the same Internet connection. Add a hub (connect the Modem to the uplink port) and your Mac can still serve as a gateway/NAT/Appletalk router, and your whole network - wired or wireless - can share all peripherals and the Internet.

Oops. Don't have a Mac? Sorry. I'm not sure how to configure this for a pure Windoze world.

I'm actually using the Airport AP at home with Linux, Windoze and Mac boxes on both wired and wireless connections. I'll never go wired again.
