Frankly, I don't think free web hosting is all that great a deal. For $10 per month and no setup fees, you can host your site with Annette at Hosting Matters. I spend more than $10 per week on cheeseburgers. I host five sites with Hosting Matters, and the service is excellent.

For your 10 bucks, you get 20 POP3 email addresses, 50MB disk space, 3000MB of transfer, CGI support, MySQL, SSL, FP extensions, web-based control panel, referral statistics, and more.

And no, Hosting Matters doesn't pay me to say this. I just think they are an excellent host.

Bannerless hosts...

I always wondered how do these bannerless free hosts support the expenses of their service? Does anyone know how that business model functions?

Very few can even keep going (no wonder), and the ones that can, have problems continually. With no money coming in (or very little), it isn't easy to provied a service like web hosting. Services are generally unreliable. I wouldn't bother to use any of them, as even my personal site is more important to me than saving a few bucks.

In regards to free hosts supporting themselves..

1. Philanthropy. Check out http://www.cfm-resources.com and you'll see what I mean.

2. They have paid hosting to back them up and do free hosting just as a side thing.

I know of one that sells ad space in a newsletter and on their own site.

Hi,

They usually require you to fill out a nice long questionaire and then send you targeted mailings based upon your results. It really isnt that bad of a deal since they send you things that they think you might be interested in. Better targeted spam then spam about life insurance.

You could check out http://www.crosswinds.net They have no banner ads, and they are hear to stay. I think they are the oldest free host out there! If you wont domain hosting, you could host with Crosswinds, and use one of the free domain redirection services like http://www.wzr.net [I think that is the URL].

I don't think crosswinds supports CGI. They may, I have never stayed on their site long enough to find out.

Crosswinds?

Crosswinds.net doesnt give cgi access though they give unlimited webspace and POP account.
Their website says they give domain name hosting but haven't tried it. They had RAID failures abt 4 to 6 months back and their servers used to keep crashing for about 2 months continuously and they worked night and day to fix it. Try accessing my site at http://www.crosswinds.net/~senkumar Most of the files are gone on a vacation to the twilight zone.

More than half the files on my personal homepage were gone though their website said all data has been restored from backups. I dint bother to email them as I now dont have time to rebuild my personal homepage. I just uploaded a few nav-bar gifs to the site via FTP then I gave up building the site.

Crosswinds may be better now. I'll check it again and keep you posted.

TheWingThing.
*sob sob* somebody ate my homepage.
