Dell Server or G5 XServe for Web Server

Just wanting to get people's opinion on whether to use a Dell Server with say a Xeon 2.4g CPU or the new Apple XServe G5 single processor.

I was going to order a Dell a month or two ago because the g4 XServe I thought lacked a little but now with the G5 it can probably cut it and I would really like to stay with Apple if I can.

We run a medium size golf website and currently use a linux box at Rackspace but want to upgrade. The Xserve would need to run the usual Apache/PHP/mySQL setup.

Does anyone have any idea on speed and feature comparisons? The XServe is pretty much the same price as the Dell because we don't need to pay for any Windoze licenses using Linux.

Any help would be appreciated....

Thansk b

The G5 is a BSD system with an IBM cpu. I would suggest going with something from supermicro running a OS that you are confortable with. Not a fan of out of the box servers.

Thanks mate.....
I am comfortable with OSX as it has been my OS of choice since 2001. My only real question is bang for buck and from what I read the new XServe G5 is the better bet but I am not a OSX user who is blind to other OS's and will buy the one that does the job best.

I would go with Redhat Enterprise AS and Dell, SuperMicro is more than fine though.

a G5 Xserver, youd be crazy not to get it LOL. I am a mac fan (but i do own a PC as well , just the mac is my system of choice) That thing would make an excellent powerful server.

May I ask where you are planning in getting these servers from? I have only seen G4's avaliable to rent....

They were released at the Mac Expo last week and will be available soon for sale. The upgrade to the G5 CPU really makes it attractive.
