Hi Folks,

We are designing this website to be a sort of
portal, but we select only some interesting topics
and provide some good links at our site. I know
that there is a lot of work to do on the site.I
am also aware that we need to provide our own
stuff too ;-) apart frm linking to other sites.

I am sure you ppl can give me some good suggestions
for improving it. I am inviting your FRANK suggestions
and advise.

TIA,
sisiro

Hi,

I have quite a few suggestions to make, so please bear with me.

1. A portal does not have a welcome page! The purpose of a portal is to help point people to sites with good, relevant content, right? Well, they also want to do it ASAP too. The 'welcome' page just wastes their time. So get rid of it and 'get to the point' (i.e. make your current home.htm the first page people see).

You can keep your current 'first' page - but more as an 'About Us' page.

2. If you're worried about spammers getting your e-mail address (as evidenced by your 'mailto -- webmaster AT sisiro.com' at the bottom of the home.htm) - then use the 'Contact Us' form instead. At the same time, there are scripts on the Net which will help send spam 'bots' to sites with millions of false addresses to choke on. If you'd like the URL, then post a response and I'll dig it up for you.

3. For a portal, links to other sites isn't enough. It's better to put in a bit more time and effort and put a short description next to the link as to why that site is there. People will feel more enticed to visit that particular site.

4. Put META tags on all your pages. Search engine bots don't necessarily come in through the front page.

5. Uhmmmmm.... What's the purpose of the 'Site Admin' page?

6. From the design point of view, it's OK... But it really feels amateurish and plain. It doesn't feel and look professional and feels like it's been put together in about 20 mins. First impressions count, and my first impressions were not good.

7. From the usability point of view, you can get around the site reasonably well.

Overall : plenty of scope for improvement in most aspects of the site.

Hope this helps.

Exclamation Thank you very much BC!

Hi BC!

Thank you so much for your frank review.
Thats helps me a lot.
I will definitely follow what you suggested.

At least ten more members frm here visited my
site, but they are not leaving any suggestions
for me. I wonder whether my site is too dull for
them (

Anyway, i am going to work on it to improve things.
Thanx folks for visiting my site.

Arrow BC pretty much said it all

... but it is evident that you have put in a lot of effort into your portal... content wise.

I would really advise you to get a good web designer to work on your site so that you can concentrate on the content aspect. I am sure you realize that the design isn't so attractive at the moment. It looks very amateurish.

Your start page announces "Portal with a personal touch". You really need to touch up your site a lot more!!!

Your basic premise for this portal is pretty good. It will get only better as it grows gradually.

Do pay attention to what BC mentioned about the META Tags. This would be extremely important for you if you wish to increase traffic to your site.

I wish you luck in your venture.

Cool

If you are goning to try and run a large links site, you might want to look for some scripts to help you handle this. One of the best for what you are trying to do is Links from Gossamer Threads. Take a look at http://www.gossamer-threads.com. I hope this helps.

I think you should concentrate on visual design, for now I think it's too simple, have nothing to catch first time user.
