Do you get more than 1 signup per day Y/N?
If so how long have you been opened and do you do any advertising. One of my pals reckons if you just open a web hosting business with affordable pricing you are bound to get 1 signup per day with no advertising besides submitting your site to a few host directories.

We get between 5 and 10 signups a day...but we've been at it for quite a few years. The more customers you have, the more customers you get...word of mouth is your best advertisement. The trick is, getting the first couple dozen customers.

Been running now for 2 years+ and this is our 3rd year of operation.
We're now averaging 2 new accounts per day [50/60 per mth, 2k/mth+], and they're at least $35/mth accounts too. No advertising used, just word of mouth and exposure on wht etc. Once you get a sizeable client base [around 1000] then you have momentum and word of mouth kicks in nicely and your main task is then to manage the growth, and not worry about getting growth.
Although in 2004 we'll commit to spending Xk/mth on promotion. I'm currently adding 2 new servers a mth to our rack. So always good to be infront of yourself a bit, in as far as server capacity.

Maybe. I couldn't see it happening in today's saturated hosting market though. Here's the question - Has your pal opened a hosting biz with no promotion and just "submitting your site to a few host directories", and does he get 1 new account per day?

We get about 2 a day. Depends on advertisement. We use Host Voice to advertise *As one of our solutions* Depends on leads we get.
Also we have others but it all is a dependency factor

We get around 5-15 signups/day. Of course most of the time it's only 5, but sometimes it spikes to 13-15 every once in awhile.
The funny thing is, it didn't steadily increase from 1 signup/day to 2 signups/day, to 3/day, etc. It went from 1 signup/day to 5/day. That was roughly 7 or so months ago I guess I got lucky

We get 1-2 accounts per day if it's a good day.
Normally, we have like 25-40 new accounts every months. Those accounts range between 5$ and 80$.

BestReseller.com averages a good bit of sign ups each day. Since we're a new company [6 months], we depend on Google Adwords, word of mouth and any other miscellaneous advertising where we see potential for new customers.
In a nutshell, you have to be willing to invest hundreds of dollars into your company if you want it to succeed.

If you're talking "ad dollars", I disagree. We've only recently started any kind of organized advertising and not to get leads, but more for branding.
In the first 5 years of hosting, I probably spent less than $500 on ads. Probably 90% of our new signups have always come from word of mouth...the rest, from forums, newsgroups and BBSs that I've always participated in.

Tina, would you not agree that one of the factors that added to you not needing to get advertising was when you entered the market?
As well, with post counts like you and Bob have, it would generate much good report, as you have yourself all over the place. BTW, I don't want to forget that they're quality posts, so people respect them.
quality posts * quantity = fantastic results
Now, what portion do you think had greater influence, your postings or the time you entered into the market?

Tina,
You are also a rare case
Starting up in this market now-a-days I wouldn't suggest the same route you too, however it could still be possible.
Richard, great point about intro to the industry.

Well Im not sure how you can say $500 unless you do not value your time.
Even though you may enjoy some of the time you spend posting to forums that is considered advertising/marketing and has a value.
So a rookie starting a new hosting business will not have the same amount of success if they just reg. with the SEs and post a few times.
My suggestions are to A). Get a good domain name (hopefully with type ins)
B). Post like a freak show responding every day to people or offering information, posting offers and posting everywhere to drive traffic to your site.
And also be sure your hosting offers are good.
Aquiring 1 customer per day is not an easy task no matter what your friend thinks.
Good luck with your new venture.
John
