Hi,
I'm trying to work out what sort of SSL certificate I should buy. ATM we are using 2co for processing but want to bring inhouse. Looking over ev1server they have chainedSSL and GeoTrust. My gut feeling is I should by GeoTrust but wondered what the difference was

We use Geotrust. Verisign has that name but they are so expensive.
There are a few browsers out there that will read 40bit encryption instead of 128Bit encryption. There are a few technical differences but I cannot remember them now. One of my programmers did a review of them.
Interesting page: http://www.freessl.com/resources/siteseal/index.html

Encryption is not my forte, but I have to wonder why I'd actually pay the extra money to get a different "brand" of 128 bit certificate when they are issued by the same company.
I didn't see what percentage the chained certificate offers, but the professional grade is 99%, and the freessl single root is 95%. Other than that, the only quote that tells me why I should pay more is "Enhance your customer's confidence with the prestige of the Internationally recognized GeoTrust brand name".
I may buy brand name clothing, but I am not so pursuaded to buy brand name certificates. "Trust" is not my fear, it's compliance.

Try Comodo SSL - a little more expensive then GEO but comes with a nice emblem for your site...
Our experience has shown that shopping cart abandonment decreases with an encryption emblem.... wierd, but true...

I could see how this would be true. However, we are not just a one-time charger. We are recurring and do multiple checks on information for their security. Hopefully it should make up, but if I notice low signups, I'll pay the extra money and get the seal.
I was, however, pleased with how fast the order process took with freessl. Comodo appeared to need paperwork, but, that's another discussion.

Hi Richard,
Yes, Comodo does scrutinize the information a little more closely. Buying through a Comodo reseller will usually save you about $10/year on the certificate and shield you from the paperwork.
Best of luck with your venture...

lol, I am a reseller. That's actually why I went with freessl, as they do a lot of the scrutinization. Though the free cert with seal would have been nice from comodo, I like the pay-as-you-go method by freessl.

GEOTrust is probably the way to go. I think ev1's still selling them for $50 too, and $20 for Chained SSL's.

I'd go with GeoTrust, and yeah, very cheap at ev1.
