sounds like it - without bruteforcing an account, there is a only a few known ways of hijacking domains out there.
How to keep safe ? Dont leave your pass saved on your local pc anywhere, and dont make it easily guessable. Aside from that, theres little else you can do. Pray ? lol

some registrars offer domain locking. it's an extra level of protection. not fool proof i'm sure, but every little bit helps.

No good if someone has access to your account.

I'm not sure how other registrars do it, but mine forces you to answer an additional security question before you can make changes to the domain. something like what's your pet's name. if someone gets your account password, that doesn't mean they know anything about you. or you could have used anything for a pet's name, not just an actual name of a pet.
This is a feature I had requested from them, and a few months later, they provided it.

They're called Post-Its, not sticky pads!

On that note, I would suggest putting using the notes one at a time rather than sticking the entire pad to your monitor

Yeah, in my opinion the safest way, make a excel worksheet with out any keyloggers.
After that either print them out, or just make a worksheet with lines and use this one thing we call PEN
