TGW: Telemarketers gone wild
a bit of background: my personal land line at my home serves as telemarketer bait - i never pick it up and never use it.
today, i pick it up by accident. sure enough, it is a telemarketing call, a guy doing some kind of 'research' on home entertainment. not giving me a chance to stop him, he rattles off the first question: 'what cable channels do you prefer?'. thinking that it may be fun, i say 'none,' and explain that i do not have cable. sure enough, he asks why. i do not need it, i say. 'watching a lot of PBS then?'. no, not at all. i do not own a television set, i explain.
a long pause follows. 'at all?' he asks, seemingly befuzzled. 'yes, completely. none at all.' another long pause follows. 'i bet you dont have that in your call script.' i say. 'why no, i do not, sir'. i suggest that the company paying for the 'research study' would not be interested in my opinion and wish him all the best. 'no need to notify the dept of homeland security,' i say, 'this is not un-american. i simply prefer books'.
i can not be the only guy who takes pleasure in stringing telemarketers along, whether it be to puzzle them or tick them off. post your experiences here =]

That sounds like it was fun...
I heard one on the radio recently, where the telemarketer called, and got put on hold...only to be pelted with "hold music" offers on how to become a telemarketer.
Hysterical.

I always respond very enthusiastic when they ask me a question.
(salespitch) ..blah blah blah, yadda yadda... are you interested?
Me: Yes, absolutly!
..and then I hang up.

asterisk (kick-butt OSS voip pbx) has a list of reasons to use asterisk. one of the reasons:
* Finally put telemarketers on hold: "All members of the household are busy assisting other telemarketers. Your call is important to us, please remain on the line"

If your really good, Play repeat with them, Some are really quick though so pay close attention.
Most will only hold-out 2-3 times and hang up.

I tried translating this... I think I picked up "Do you have .......? ......! =]" Not even sure if the "do you have" part is right. There's only so much you can learn from rock music.
Anyway, just tell them that you're interested in their product, and put the phone down. Every 15 or 30 seconds, say "yes" or "i see", and put the phone back down again. See how long you can keep them on the phone like that

I usually interrupt them on their second sentence,
"I am not interested. Thank you". Then I hang up.
A bit rude, but they are rude to start with

You should always pick up the phone, that way they have to pay for it
