Proftpd or Pure-ftpd ?

Do you currently use Proftpd or Pure-ftpd? What advantages do you see from either ? We currently run proftpd on our cpanel servers, but are considering pureftpd due to users moaning on FTP speed.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for your help

Warm Regards,
Ben

I run Pureftpd and have not had a single complaint about anything.. The time to login is much faster.. The transfers seem about the same though but I have run pureftpd since about the second day so I have not tested it much.

What exactly are they complaining about? The end user's transfer speed isn't going to be noticeably affected by what ftp server you're running.

If it's just slow logins, all you have to do is run the current version of proftpd and make sure your DNS is working. If it's still slow, turn UseReverseDNS and IdentLookups off. Logins should be (pending ther factors of course) nearly instantaneous.

Pureftpd is much faster and uses less ram. However if using cPanel it doesn't log bandwidth. As stated on the FTP choice page It clearly states pros/cons

Yep, I use ProFTPd only because it logs the bandwidth usage...

I have some hostees that operate out of FTP... design firms and the like. So I _need_ to track that bandwidth.

I do agree that PureFTPd *seems* faster... Although I have come to like ProFTPd more.

I've used both and I must say that there is definitely a noticable difference between Pure-FTP and Pro-FTP. I'd rather give up the bandwidth logging for speed and security. It comes down to what the host needs of course. In our case we value the security and speed is just a benefit.

I had a customer infor me that PureFTPd would be faster so I tried it for a while and about half my customers emailed me saying that FTP was down 'unable to resolve hostname' and our techs were unable to suggest a solution other than to switch back to ProFTPd and we haven't had any problems since doing so.
