shipping rate question.

i want to build my own ecommerce web site.
kinda got stuck on shipping part.

i know shipping is depends on the size , weight and where you want to deliver it.

How can you calculate that.? doesn't ups and fedax give u the code, u can integrate inot your existing web site?

You can integrate into the major carriers, yes. It is not a trivial process but it can be done.

You can also do shipping calculation through a variety of other methods - flat fee, % of sale, tiered on # of units, tiered on total sale price, etc.

Or if you use an off the shelf cart - they will often have some prebuilt options for some (or all) of the above.

Not sure which shopping cart solution youre using, but oscommerce offers integrating with some of the major carriers.

All you need to do is setup an account with them, enter your box dimensions and weights into your catalog and your customers can recewive real time shipping quotes and select their preferred method (air, ground, etc...) during checkout

UPS has a simple perl module that can fetch quotes (I assume there is a similar thing for php), USPS sends you quotes via XML file which you can parse through easily, FedEx is a bit more tricky and generally requires a full API interface. Pretty much doing the integration with UPS/USPS is a simple job (there are some sample scripts somewhere on my site...), however, making sure you have redundancy, multiple carriers and the ability to actually ship out on time can be a rather tricky thing.
