dot5hosting ... how are they still in business?

What follows is a conversation I had with some clever chaps at dot5hosting.com (via their live support). If anyone can offer me some advice as to anything I can do regarding the occasional 5 hrs of downtime in a day and intermittent downtime for several mintues at a time at least several times per day, I'd love to hear it. As I'm sure all of you realize, I'll be getting an account elsewhere (probably lunarpages). I also wanted to post this to warn potential dot5hosting customers and inform existing ones...

*Me is me, Tech is Cindy@dot5hosting*

Tech: Welcome to Dot5hosting! Allow me to introduce myself as your chat representative...This is Cindy here. How can I help you?
Me: Hi, ns3 is down, please let me know what the problem is and when it will be fixed. Thanks.
Me: the status page claims its up... but no luck pinging ns3
Me: hello?
Tech: the system admins are working on the server
Me: I would assume so... do you know concretely what the problem is or when it will be fixed?
Tech: Sorry
Tech: at present I do not have any ETA
Tech: nor any update on what the exact issue is
Me: you see, I am trying to test an application on ns3 and do not want to linger around if the site is going to be down for a whole day (not unusual in my recent experiences with dot5). If you could somehow find out for me I would greatly appreciate it. I am in the middle of my working day and cannot work without ns3 being up, so I'm sure you understand my dilemma. Thanks.
Me: Noticed that didn't have a question, if you could find out an ETA I would greatly appreciate it...
Tech: As per my estimation it should take another 3 - 4 hours for all the sites to be up and working fine
Me: would it be possible for you to email me when you find out anything on what actually happened and if it comes back up or if you get a more clear estimate of when it will be up?
Tech: I'm sorry that is not possible right now
Me: it has been over one month since I got the account, after I get all of the files off that I have worked on, will it be possible to get a full refund because of unacceptable downtime?
Me: it has been about 2 months
Tech: no
Tech: as you are not under the 30 day money abck policy
Tech: *back
Me: so there is no way for me to be compensated for my loss of time and money?
Tech: I'm sorry at present there is no such refund policy
Me: is there anyone at sales or management I can contact to persue this matter?
*several minutes pass*
Me: still there, Cindy?
Tech: no
Tech: presently there is no one that you can follow-up this issue
Tech: if there is a refund policy for the clients of ns3 then we will be applying it to all the clients
Me: ok. do you have any advice for me regarding my service?
Tech: At present the system admins are working on the issue and the server will be up and running fine in the next few hours
Me: ok, good night
Tech: Have a great night!
Tech: Have a good night and take care.
Tech: Bye for now!

It would appear to me that your main recourse would be to move to another host thus causing dot5 to lose another client.

As far as getting a refund is concerned you may be out your money dependant on their policies, I suppose you could seek legal counsel If it meant enough to you but you may just want to cut your losses.

I hope you have better luck with your next host.

Didn't they sell to Ipowerweb? I remember there being an article about it recently.

Yep, I noticed it too. Although they also had an 'interview' with Chris which was rather funny.

I think that was a rumour..

It seems to me that the person that started the rumour, also mentioned the TV show named "punk'd" a little later after a few replies, which i interpreted as he has "played" a few people in falsifying the truth.

Ahhhhh, that makse sense. The reported sale price of 2 Million pounds was horrendously insane.

No kidding, that price of purchase for a company that currently, whether earned or not, has one of the worst reputations in the industry. Teamed with the fact that they have no actual hardware of their own, and a number of underlying factors, the price for dot5 would be, by any sensible business man, no where near the figure stated. And i mean nowhere near

Is that for real? Surely it can not be a rumour if there is a pubic press release on the matter. Has anyone got confirmation from iPowerWeb?

This is just my opinion but something is up over there. I know someone reading this is thinking "Gee DNA your a genius for pointing this out!" No what I mean is some emails I have sent directly have not been responded to and I have noticed they removed the "forums" from their web page so now we can no longer hear from other users or correlate experiences / nightmares.

On the brighter side of things / life I just had a incredible dark roast coffee and my dog just came into the room after a night sleep and is really happy to see me !

advice?

I've been developing an application on a dot5 server (yes, yes, big mistake, I'm ashamed) and all I need now to be completely free of dot5 is a dump of the mysql database. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get to that DB in over 2 days. Support can't help obviously. I need the DB dump so I can get the application working elsewhere ASAP... any advice on what to do?

If you have SSH access to the server, try logging in and going into:

/var/lib/mysql

you may be able to get there depending on your server's setup and access rights. Look for your database name in that folders listing:

ls -l

there should be a folder with the same name as your database. Tar it up:

tar cvf * ~/databasename.tar
gzip databasename.tar

and then FTP/SCP it out of there. On your new host you should then create the database again, with the same name ideally, log in and untar/gzip the files into the same location. That should restore your DB.

This method is handy when MySQL either isn't or cannot run for whatever reason.

Good luck,

Brian

I see that this kind of suggestion pops up now in a while here. It's basically not going to do any good. Not a single lawyer will want to work for your for just, what, $100 losses? It's much cheaper to just let the case go and move on. If you want to pursue, though, you will have to do it through a small claim court on the state where dot5hosting has a business presence and/or property. But with all the filing fees, effort, etc, it will still be much cheaper to just let it go.

That's my advise.
