Question

Kernel upgrade

What's the latest kernel version for Red Hat 9.0?

Can I upgrade kernel without redhat netwotk (not using up2date)?

Thanks

Upgrading kernel without up2date is possible and for many is the default way. In the Rackshack's forums there is a good howto about it, if I remember well.

latest kernel from kernel.org is 2.4.23.

I prefer my custom kernel rather than redhat kernel.

any1 knows how redhat kernel rpm's version number works? their updated kernel is kernel-2.4.20-24.9. so is this rpm built on 2.4.23 or 2.4.20?

20 (-24 is their patch version) and 9 indicates RH 9

This is for Debian, not RH 9.0

^^^ Build the kernel with -march=athlon-xp gcc flags, that'll help for a start.

Never built my own kernel before, what things do I have to pay attention to?

I've built all other software on my servers, the kernel is the only thing that remained untouched so far..
