What is the common software that is used for umpteen million web-shops (resellers)?

It seems that they all use templates, because all the shops have nearly identical sites.

Is this the best option?
Or just the cheapest and easiest?

There are a *lot* of sites on our servers that use oscommerce:

The reason a lot of them look 'the same' is because the webmasters haven't taken the time to fully customize it. There's a *ton* of hacks/mods for it and it's easily customizable. It's also a nice program, overall, and the price can't be beat (free). Check out some of the example sites here:

2nd most popular is xcart - don't have as much 1st hand experience though with this one.

the concept of opensource shopping software sounds dangerous, but if enough people use it, then it has to be ok.

Another thread that involves oscommerce healimonster: actually don't you think open source would be better? That way there's TONS of experienced programmers who have worked with the guts of the software and can inform the official developers of flaws/glitches and possibly offer solutions. These people also some up with some great contributions that can be installed as add on "modules" fairly easily to add additional features.

OScommerce cart rocks! It is a great cart that has contributions from thousands of people to make it one of the greatest carts out there. The cart comes with many features already included and if it does not already have it included in the standard version some one has probably already come up with a mod/plug-in for it. The cart works with over 120 merchant gateways and has one of the most active forums beside the one you are reading now.

Also H-Sphere has incorporated the cart into their system so if you find a reseller account with a hosting company that uses H-Sphere you simply can include it in your plan and then go into the client's end user CP and turn it on. Is creates the entire cart and mysql DB in seconds.

Anyway it is a great cart and will 99.5% of the time do the trick for an e-commerce solution.
