looking 4 good shoping basket software
Hi all,
I have a project to create an online store for a client. Does anyone know of any software / packages etc that I could use to set the store up and then have them run things.
By this I mean a package that can be updated via a browser so the store owner could administer the business themselves.
I would like it to keep track of stock levels too when someone makes a purchase.
Not explained that very well but you get the idea.
Thanks
Shan

I reckon £100 - £200 would be within the budget.
It all depends on what can be done with the package I suppose,

Akopia.com which I believe is free.
Also check cgi-resources.com which has some good carts.

Hi,
Miva Merchant v4.0 is probably what you need, it's easy to manage and also have the features such as:
Inventory Tracking
Site Traffic and Sales Statistics
Attribute Templates
Affiliate Tracking
and many other features. However the retail price might put a big dent in your wallet ($595). What I suggest is that you would need to look for web hosts which provides this software along with their ecommerce packages. It can range from $29.95 to $59.95/month.
Here's a demo:

Thanks for those.
I checked miva which looks good but yes a little pricey for this job.
Ill take a look through the cgi stuff to see what i can find. I also found world pays "click and build" anyone have any experience with this.
The business will be a mainly uk setup, I suppose this wont be a problem but thought i should just add that. The store will need to be in £ gbp.
Any more ideas ?
thanks

Shan,
check out www.quikstore.com it can handle many things such as inventory with a plug in. We have been using it for sometime now and even if it is not using an Sql database it works very good for a site with around 1000 items.

about all that will cost you is some time, and a secure cert for the checkout. It's not overly pretty (though I've seen far worse), but is a solid piece of work from what I've seen of it. Depending on your needs this might do you.

Has anyone else used any of the free shopping cart scripts and if so how did you get on ?

Shan,
I have set up TEP and it looked very promising, but at a later stage in the testing it failed. I don't recall all around but one thing was that when I used a translation it all of a sudden didn't email the orders and some other things. This was for a Swedish website but it worked ok in English as far as I could tell. However, I have tried many free ones and they have all failed in some area when trying to set them up locally. Most seems to be targetting the US (market).
Quikstore is the only one that I have found that can handle any language and currency and also being able to handle any page layout (combining html and database store). It also allows you to have both £ and Euro displayed. The store owner maintains the products on his own computer and just uploads changes, very easy. Yes, it cost money but with all the features it comes with it's a very good product for the money. Finally, no I'm not in any way connected to quikstore besides being a very happy customer.

These two are probably the most robust *free* shopping cart systems around. I strongly reccomend either of them.

I think that www.TheExchangeproject.org is the best free shopping cart. I am running the las CVS version and it works perfectly. A new release version (2.2) is coming out soon.
The cvs version I am running works perfectly with all currencies and in any language (I use English, Spanish and German). Check out their website where you can find Live sites using this shopping cart software and some demo sites.
Can't wait for the next release !!!!!.....
