Youth/Teens areas
Hi there,
My suggestion is not to restrict youth or teens but to have a few areas especially FOR youth and teens to discuss being a young webmaster ot teen entrepreneurs and even perhaps to sell their stuff and offer services in advertising forums.
Each time I encounter member hostility towards a young participant..(on the basis of age alone).or watch a young participant attempt to gain a place here and a few bucks by cheating ..I think about this. Such forums could be moderated by Youth/Teen members who are successful in these things

I actually must say that's an idea, although I am not so sure that would work in the best way here. I am almost wondering if perhaps a TeenWebHostingTalk forum could be an idea. With so many of the next generation wanting to be hosts, perhaps we could start something to teach them the real thing.

We could have some of us who work well with youth in the forums as "mentors" to keep them in good spirits

However if the youth are wanting to learn about business they also need to learn the responsabilites that come with it. Rules and regulations are part of business and part of growing up. While I might support a section to mentor younger members, I still see the need for all users to be held responsable for the same rules.

Oddfact,
Agreed. The only difference I would see is approach. It is worth taking a little more time to explain the rules to the young people.
For instance , there is a situation where a young guy is putting foward a template site as one he created. I'm willing to spend an extra few minutes an explain why being specific in that way matters
Without enforcement it would not teach them anything.
On the other hand if after banned they have not learned anything it doesn't serve anyone well. Mentors could take a few moments to talk with the young member when they mess up and give them some ways they can meet their goals more effectively without being banned
I agree with the need for older people..but I would encourage having one or two older people work with a few youth to moderate the area..and then some older mentors around...but really work to enable the young mods to learn to do the job well.
This would also be a way for a young person to get great reference for a paying job;-)

Perhaps an "Entrepeneurship Forum" would do the job.

That sounds good to me sanjiv. It would be a targeted forum, modded just as the others are. However, it would be a friendly place for kids where they would not so often come under the line of fire as they more often than not do on these boards as they currently are. I think better education for the kiddies in the industry can better develop the industry. Heck, it might can cut down on some of these kids that don't have a clue but have their own host.

non-harrassed environment is what is needed. Prehaps a forum on here for it?
or a partner forum for it on a subdomain, ie.youth.webhostingtalk.com
and the current mods can look after it, or get some extra mods just for itMERRY CHRISTMAS!

I personally don't see a need for a special forum for the young hosts. The age bashing is in a minority (I can only recall about three major issues with age). Most of the young ones interact well with with the older folks and I commend them for that.
Sure there are few with a "bee in their bonnet", but you also find some more mature beings with that same bee. Most young ones are reading and learning and ask advice. Just as you get some impulsive youths, you also get impulsive adults.

Anyway do you really think a teen will post his age on this forum, when trying to reach customers? No way he'll do it and the forums will be sooooooooo boring.
Good idea but it won't workCharles Beliveau | NymixWeb.com

We could start by remembering to supportive of our younger and new members who are looking for guidance and help in the hosting industry. If a user sees a post flaming a younger user or an inappropriate post, just report the post.

I think the younger members can get all the help they need from the other forums already here, theres nothing much that can go in a new forum thats not already in the others I dont think...
The current older and more experienced members can just help the younger ones in the other current forums, which most already do anyway.
I dont remember many times where a younger member has been flamed because of their age...If they did then its the older members that should get a ranting forum instead of taking it out on some people looking to get information on the industryJohn Diver

Although an interesting idea, not one I support
This is a board for business persons, whether in the hosting/provider business or in the business of operating web sites. If young persons want to join that community, then they need to conform to the rules and expected conduct of that community-no different than anyone else. To learn how to enter and how to operate, what better than the "running a web hosting business" forum. Many highly respected members here operated and participated while still minors. On the other hand, many so-called adults show the maturity of a 10 year old....well, not even that.
As to the age bashing, it generally only happens after someone exhibits a lack of maturity that brings age into question. For instance, I never suspected the age of Daniel (VO, now Effectsonline) or Alan (Splashhost) prior to them disclosing it publicly at some point. They always showed a maturity that would have made me comfortable dealing with them. Frankly, I can point out many posts today that I would have suspected came from 13 year olds, except I know better.
Again, this is a place for even youth to act like adults. If they do so, they will be treated with respect and assisted.
