Whats up with Cogent lately?

There has not been much talk about cogent lately, so I am wondering what is up with their network? I heard by some that they were getting alot better? I also heard that they were about to go bankrupt?

Is anyone using their bandwidth? How are the pings lately?

Also, has anyone ever tried the deal cogent has for a free rack in their datacenter with 100Mbps at 3,000 per year?

Thanks, Kyle

I haven't heard much about the state of cogent, but I think you have the price wrong. I believe the 100mbps + rack is $3000 per month, not year. (at least this is what their site says)

You'll find posts from over 18 months ago predicting the same thing back then.

Stock was up a buck last week (I think) before the earnings report.

Tendency

As we all know, it is much easier to complain rather than to praise. You will notice that a lot more threads in this forum are dedicated to complaints rather than compliments. Sadly, this is normal in this forum. So, I would not be surprised if the same thing applies to Cogent.

IMHO, Cogent deserves more good news than bashings. I for one, hardly have problems with Cogent. They may have more hops (and sometime less) than others, but they have also been stable since day one (we have it in our mix bandwidth). Hopefully they will do even better.

Frankly, I'm shocked that they are still around. Not only because they still aren't profitable but because their position as the dirt cheap bandwidth provider has largely become irrelevant. With providers like GBLX, Abovenet, and XO selling so cheaply why would anyone want Cogent?

Cogent may not be dead and they still may survive for a while longer. However, with so much competition I don't ever see them actually making a profit.

they do have some very nice pricing on transport though. that may give them a bit more to float on.

According to Cogent's Director of Sales the last few months have been the best months ever for them: sales and profitability are way up.

So, Cogent is doing quite well and only going to do better. As long as not bought from a provider who oversells (maxes out their circuit), it's fairly good quality bandwidth to most destinations, and considering that it also includes transport in the price, still one of the best deals out there.

There is an adversarial machine which will always be against Cogent. Why? There are so many reasons and this thread could go on for pages discussing the topic.

What it really comes down to: The people that have used it for a period of time quite enjoy the reliability and price. Those that do not have it, will always be a bit jealous that they're paying more for bandwidth and that Cogent users are able to reduce costs and pricing, regardless of whether or not other providers are truely "better."

Personally, I quite enjoy the performance level of Cogent and would do business with them even if the prices were higher.

And no, they are not about to go bankrupt. If they were, yet another company would acquire their assets, just like MFN/Above and just like Global Crossing.

I have been using cogent in Florida for a couple months now. I haven't had any complaints from GAMING customers and that says a lot. Gaming is one of the most latency and lag sensitive areas. You get any weird hiccups and you'll be hearing a lot of complaints.

We've been with Cogent (among others, williams, abovenet, xo, verio, yipes) for a couple years now and have had an overall good impression of their lines. Yes they had problems in the past but I definitely believe they are getting better and think that they should survive from this point on.

If Cogent is getting better what do you think are the contributing factors?

Alot of people left for providerXYZ for a couple bucks more permbit so their peering is no longer maxed out.....just a guess...

We use Cogent in our mix as well and some of our customers have dedicated Cogent bandwidth and I must say we have been VERY happy with there reliabllity and speed.

In fact, I would even go as far as saying there realiability has been better then some providers priced twice as much.
