Virtual tour of VW's $200 million glass factory

This is a couple of months old, but I'd never seen it. Very cool!

Pretty amazing factory, and a good read.

Aside from the fact that the factory is pretty spectacular, it's a pretty interesting car. Available setups include VW's new "W12" 6-liter 12-cylinder engine with 4-motion AWD -- and all the requisite luxury touches like GPS navigation, TV reception, integrated cell phone... and the routine things like 4-zone climate countrol, xenon headlights, automatic "dusk-sensing" driving lights...

Most of which doesn't mean much. I bought my current VW for the VR6 engine; wasn't too interested in the luxury stuff that came with it as a result. I'd feel the same way about this W12.

I don't know how much you make, but...

Q: Who exactly is the target customer?
A: Fiercely individual self-made people who aren’t label-conscious. They’re expected to be aged 50 to 55, 75-percent male, 85-percent married, 75-percent college graduates, with a $300,000 median household income.
If it's under 300,000/yr., maybe you'll be interested in the "luxury stuff" then?

Well, I'm in six figures...but not approaching $300,000 yet. Maybe in a few years!

what a waist of money. A good earthquake could make them realize on why they shouldn't be building an all glass building.

Wooden floors really confused me... If this is a real factory, it will get messy through time. Wooden floors are just not practical for this kind of job. Plus, it looks more like a museum. Too comfortable.

I suspect that no matter what my income may be when it comes to cars I'll always be more interested in the engine, performance, and handling than in automatic dusk-sensing driving lights and exotic wood trim.
