Need a new monitor: LCD or CRT
And YES I will base my decision on the poll.
Unless I don't want to.
I think it's finally time to move on from my 15inch CRT monitor, but I don't know exactly where to move on to... LCD's are a lot more expensive, but they may be worth it?
The best prices I have seen around here have been.
$460AU - 15 inch LCD.
$180AU - 17 inch flatscreen CRT.
I generally use the computer for hours each day (wish I didn't, but don't really have much of a choice!) so it's probably best to get something which is good for my eyes, right?
That would suggest an LCD, as they are better for ones eyes? However... is it worth how much extra money it is? I hate spending money on computer stuff... it's such a waste.
A question about LCD's - Can you change the screen res? I know on my laptop, anything other than 1024 (default) just doesn't look right... but I would prefer to be able to have 800*600, but if not being able to be anything other than the default is standard for LCD's then I guesS I can't.
Is it worth getting an LCD instead of a CRT? It's a lot more money and the screen size is smaller... but I just don't know.

I think this depends on your situation. CRT's may typically give you better quality resolution, are cheaper, but take up more deskspace. If you don't need to same quality but need more deskspace and can afford the LCD then that may be an option.

Additionally, CRT's generally have a faster refresh rate and you won't get the blurred images that you do with less expensive LCD's. Additionally, your viewing angles are much broader on CRT's.
A nice flat screen CRT beats an LCD any day.
However, LCD's are much easier on the eyes.

That is wrong. Refresh rates have no impact on LCDs. What matters most is the response time of the LCD.
If you are only getting an LCD for office work, get one with at least 25ms response time. If you use it for games as well, get one with a 16ms response time.
I recently invested in an LCD and will never look back.
Also, what's important to note is that a 15" LCD is as big as a 17" CRT.
Measure your CRT display area and compare that with the LCD and you'll see what I mean.

I agree with net-trend almost on the size thing. As far as I remember a 17" monitor is usually 15.9" viewable. So they are a little bigger.
Id prefer an LCD although I have a nice Sony 21" Flat CRT. If I was to buy again and had the cash I would go for an LCD but I do like the 21" screen and the equivelent LCD would be a tad pricey.

You're correct in that. My fault in posting that. Since the cells are either on or off, you're not going to have to worry about flicker. However, unless you're going with a high end LCD (i.e. more than a $300 15") then you're not going to be happy with it if you do gaming, watch movies or video, etc.
A 15 inch LCD is the same as a 17" LCD. A 14 inch LCD is the same as a 15" CRT.
Anyway, I should have differentiated refresh rates and response times, but the end result is still the same.

An LCD anyday. No doubts. They are great space savers too. Try putting a 21" CRT on your desk and you know what I mean...

I'm wondering the same thing too. The only problem I have with LCDs is the fact that you can't really change the screen resolution and still have everything look as clear.

Forgot to ask...what are some good LCD brands? For example, I've heard that LCDs made by Samsung and Viewsonic are really good, true?

Sharp, Sony etc are brands I would go for. Check out their Contrast ratios.

one of you mentioned response time, I have a hard time finding that, how do you find out what the response time is for a LCD?

Go to their respective websites and click on the feature list or technical specs.

That's what I did, it's not listed. Either that or I'm not seeing it, is it called anything else besides response time?

It's only called response time as far as I know. Which sites are you looking at?

Not that I'm aware of. I have only seen it called that. I have noticed that some manufacturers do not have it listed as well while others do.
