Question

Multiple nameservers, single IP

Hello,

A year or two ago I could only register one nameserver per IP address. I notice now that it will allow the registration of multiple nameservers to a single IP address.

Is this now standard practise? Will it cause problems if I do this?

If my two main server nameservers are registered to two IP addresses and reverse DNS entries setup, can I simply get my resellers to register their nameservers to the same IP's?

This would obviously reduce the number of IP addresses I use as most are used for nameserver registration. I guess this is why the changes were made in the first place, to free up IP's.

Thanks

It's ok to do, but some problems may occur, the problem lies in the reverse DNS setup, some networks may require that the reverse match.

If you have multiple on the same IP obviously some may not reverse correctly if calls are made from aliased nameserver hosts.

Not a huge problem, but one to consider depending on whats going on.

Thanks for the replies

Bashar - What would I need to do to setup an anonymous reverse for the nameservers? Do you mean using a domain that isn't 'traceable' to my business domain?

no i mean if you want to host your resellers and when someone lookup the IP and it gives a reverse dns of your company name, your reseller might be upset to set it up to anonymous name or set it for nothing as i see no harm without revrese dns

All my current resellers use their own nameservers, none of them have been setup with reverse dns entries, and I have never had any problems so I assume this way would be no different.
