128kbps is Not 1mbps...

So I'm looking to colo another server.

I've contacted 2 colo places (names will remain anonymous).

1 colo place has a cage within a datacenter. They can provide me with:

1U space with 1mbps (~300GB) for around $185/mo.

The other place is a datacenter, granted the prices will be higher, but they can offer me

1 U + 128kbps (~41GB) for $134
or
1U + 256kbps (~80GB) for $234

Maybe it's me, but I tried explaining to the Datacenter that they are only giving me 41GB of transfer per month while the other place can give me more transfer for less.

The datacenter tells me it's the say.. that 128kbps is 300Gigbites which is what the first place can offer me. I tell them that no, it's not 300GigaBites, but 300Gigabytes that they can offer me.

They reply with:

Quote:
Every one of our engineers think this is bogus; perhaps
you may have access to 1Mbps at 3 in the morning.
Well I don't know how to respond to that.. obviously if I purchase 1mbps it would be at all times of the day.. not 3AM.

They also respond saying that their biggest client averages 512kbps a month, which is roughly 165.888GB. Well I plan on hitting above that and currently their 512kbps is set to $399 or something.

My question, is the first deal a better deal? 1mbps for $185/mo ? Or are they the same? Let's not analyze the datacenter or company in question, let's say they were able to provide the 1mbps.

First deal is a way better deal, if they billed on Average.

1 megabit/s is roughly 300 some gigabytes per month, yes.

I think either you or the datacenter is just getting bits and bytes confused.

For one thing, bits is spelled without an e, that could be the source of a bit of the confusion.

Ok.

So I was originally right. they can only offer me 256kbps(80GB) for $199/mo. while the other place can offer me roughly 300GB (1mbps) for $185/mo.

Staying simple, yes you are correct.

That 256kbps for $199/month deal better be some GOOD bandwidth because that is a premium price to pay.

That's well over what internap would costs per megabit, even at a 1mbit commit.

I'm not sure how they can justify that cost per mbit using only Level3 (very solid provider) and TimeWarner....

But I can't give any input, never used them

and *unless* you max out the 1mb/s connection 24/7 you'll never get anywhere near 300Gb of transfer/month - we have users regularly peaking @ 4Mb/s that dont get > 400 Gb transferred.

so you,re probably looking at 100-150Gb transferred /month per 1mb/s bandwidth purchased

Hi Nick,

Care to elaborate? I'd love to find Internap at $200/mb on a 1mbps commit. Perhaps you're referring to a circuit external to an Internap DC?

Brandon
