Pop up adds
Okay I was looking around for certin designs people have done to get an idea on how portals looks.
I go to this one site (cant remember name of it) but it had 8 pop ups within one after the other. I got out of the site fast and counted 17 pop ups. Now tell me what do people think when thinking "hey lets put up 8 pop up adds and hope one will click on them and join!"

Most likely they are getting paid per impression. Nothing to do with clicking through on any of them.

Ad is an advertisement
ADD - is adding something
Let me give you an example Sir.
I am going to add some mayonaise to my french fries.
I am going to add a pop up ad on my website.

You mean one of *those* days... hehe
Anyways, yes that is quite annoying when you seem to have an endless # of popups when you open up one page...

Had them blocked for years.

In an example like that I would suppose the admin of the site had traded the sense of community for the ability to pay for it (or even make a profit).
On the other hand it's also sometimes true that paying members never see the ads, hence the machine gun approach to non-paying viewers.

I've thought about writing in a system to my website that pops up a popup window displaying this week's special or something along those lines. Or even a "1st time visitor" special where the system only pops it up for IP's that has never visited the site before. It would only be offered once, (and clearly states that).
But I'm afraid that peoples popup blockers will stop it.
Maybe I should look into those Flash "pop ins" that come up on the page you are viewing...

Jon FB:
Get Mozilla and avoid popups while enjoying tabbed browsing.

To be perfectly honest I've never seen the huge attraction with tabbed browsing, isn't that what the task bar is for (mind you I don't have hundreds of windows open at once).
I use Safari and Mozilla Firebird a lot on my Mac but I still use IE on my PC. Norton does the popup blocking for me.

Now I know why everyone hate pop up. Pop up are crazy. It is like having people pop out of a jumping jack box. To block pop up go to http://www.alexa.com and download the toolbar. They will block pop up from any websites you don't want to see pop up from. Why not block all the pop up, and soon people will stop using them.

The Google Toolbar will get most all of them too, and you can set it to allow pops at the sites you choose to allow them on. Get it at: http://toolbar.google.com/
