I think there is a huge difference between MicroSoft the company, Bill Gates the man and MicroSoft products we use.

Agreed. This is a good thing they're doing. I don't support Microsoft at all. I use linux even on all my home computers. Some people may be tempted to say MS is doing this for the publicity. But whatever their motivation, a lot of good can come of this.

It still doesn't negate all the bad things they do, but it is a commendable act.

The cop didn't expect a response.
Nobody really expects a responce, come on.

Bill's email must be getting 10000+ emails plus a day. (mostly spam and viruses ) and who would have thought it to be his real address?

Anyway, I think that he has no reason NOT to do it.

40$ billion.... there are countries with budgets that are smaller I think...

Neat... Well, now doesn't that make you wonder about who's interested in collecting those pics.... *Cough*bill*cough*

Sorry, had to run off in a hurry eariler, let me expand on this...

Since they aim for this to be something big, it'll turn out in one of two methods which will incriminate them...
1) They monopolize the police force with this software... Need I further explain?
2) They run the server in one centralized location so all police forces world wide can use these information. Now how is this bad? Well, there's no way any ISP would be willing to host it, so the datacenter for this will be conviently located in Bill's own datacenter... Now that really makes you wonoder... What's better way to collect something illegal then letting the police send them straight to your own server/pc? hm.....

So, yah, when I looked at it, it doesn't really change what I see him one bit... But hey, I maybe wrong, and I'm definetly open for debate...

Way to go Bill

But like others say, it doesn't change my perspective on Microsoft itself :p

*Maybe I'll send Bill a nice email *

The policies behind Micro$oft completely and totally suck, as do the security "features" in their Operating Systems.

For almost every 1 article you'll find that's good about Micro$oft, you'll find at least 5 that points out flaws in their design and whatnot. Why? Because, as a whole, the Windows system sucks.

Gates as a person is a great guy I'm sure. Hell, he donates to how many different charities, has founded how many others? Micro$oft will probably develop this software, turn around and sell it, charging for upgrades and come out with a huge profit. That's how a company that size GETS that size, not by giving things away.

I think you all are clueless. Do you realize how hard it is to make an operating that is compatiable with so many different hard ware configurations, the trillions of different software out there that run on the Windows operating system?

Oh we realize how hard it is...but it took them how long to make security a priority? Please....gimme a break here...Let's look at another company like Apple who, while still has problems with their OS, has developed a system that minimizes such things.

Now Microsoft wants to develop hardware...I wonder why.

(Note: Do not start an Apple<->Microsoft War please)

Well we must think here. The normal computer users wants features. Most of them could careless about security. Seeing as the computer user brings in the cash for Microsoft I don't see reason why they shouldn't cater to them.

Of course we could always turn this arguement around and point out that Linux, which focus' on security, is the most commonly hacked OS.
