Purchasing a Co-Lo Server

I was wondering if someone could post maybe half a dozen of the best places on the net to get co-lo servers. I want something built to last, something of quality and of a fair price.

I'm not looking for a cheapy box, something quality that can handle a large 10K or more sql database on the back end.

Also what operating systems do you folks recommend, ive been told FreeBSD is the way to go if you have a good admin.

comments thoughts and suggestions?

Dell.com, IBM.com, supermicro.com and some of there affiliates are highly recomended.

Free BSD and RH Linux seem to be the most popular Unix type operating systems.

We use apaqdigital. This guy builds real quality boxes with only top quality components. For the quality of the work and product his price is very good. His delivery time is also quite good.

dell.com and freeBSD

Watch dell often in the small business section. They always have a deal running about every 10 days.

I own several Dells, and like them quite a bit. The best deals can usually be found at bankrouptcy auctions. As for the operating system, OpenBSD 3.4 is going to be released on Nov 1.

Intel/Linux boxes are real popular on WHT. I suspect this is true because of the broad based user (and paid) support available.

Depending on your skill-set, or who you will use to admin the server, Sun has some very nice entry servers that will work.

Sun Box with all Sun components:
http://store.sun.com/catalog/doc/Bro...html?cid=77644

V100 550Mhz Sparc, 1GB Ram, 2x 40GB drives Raid 1: $1830.00
V100 550Mhz Sparc, 1GB Ram, 2x 120GB drives Raid 1: Not Available

Sun Box with 3rd Party components:
V100 550Mhz Sparc, 1GB Ram, 2x 40GB drives Raid 1: $1230.00
V100 550Mhz Sparc, 1GB Ram, 2x 120GB drives Raid 1: $1380.00
* Sun warranty void using 3rd party components

These prices (I think) are not all that much more than a decent Intel box, and less than some I've seen.

Sun OS is quite a nice system.

The down side is getting sun help is more challenging than getting Linux help. I purposely selected a data center that staff's Sun certified tech's, so that I can get help if I get over my head.

Hope this helps, and doesn't confuse the issue.

Bob
