How much does your datacenter charge for IPs?

Hi,

Just wondering -- for those of you who have colocated servers, how much does your datacenter charge per class C of IP addresses?

Our old datacenter gave them to us for free as long as we could justify them, but MFN/Abovenet charges $500 one-time for a class C. Is Abovenet's price high or is that about the going rate?

Thanks,
Erica

Typically, if you can justify the IP addresses; you can get them for free. But, It is very difficult to justify having an entire class C on a single 1U server with no SSL certificates, etc.

We've never gotten into the habit of simply selling IP addresses. It's hard to justify to ARIN that someone paid us $500, so we gave them a /24 to use across 2-3 servers.

Hurricane Electric gives out IPs for free with justification.

Yes, that's what I heard MFN is doing too. You could also get IP by increasing your commitment though. I think they're the only carrier that charges for IP address.

IP's

Peer 1 Network does not charge for IP's as long as you can justify them according to ARIN Rules.

Sorry to drag this one out of the dead, but I've just been told an interesting thing by a friend:

Abovenet:
IPs = $500 one-time for a class C
Shelves = free

HE.Net:
IPs = free
Shelves = $60 one-time per shelf

I guess it all balances out in the end. Well, not really, but at least that made me feel a bit better.

For me and my Datacenter, I get charged $1/mo per IP, so a 64 IP block costs me $64/mo, which I pass onto my customers who use the IP's.

Shelves... as in, placing your equipment on a shelf in your rack because it isn't rackmountable.

Wow, that's even worse than Abovenet...! You have my sympathies.

IMHO, no datacenter (true datacenter, not dedicated server provider) should be charging monthly for IPs. You're already paying a huge amount to colocate there... they should either be charging a one-time setup fee or not charging at all.

Where? At Abovenet?

We just sent them an Excel spreadsheet showing 255 IP addresses and what server we intended to place on each one (you have to show 60% utilization to be approved.) Once they received the spreadsheet, they approved our request.

most providers i've dealt with will give you a handful up front for free with no justification, and after that they *should* be able to give you as many as needed with justification. if they can't, they must be small beans or have crappy peering and you should look elsewhere. in the case of abovenet... i think they mark that up that much so people are discouraged from abusing it or colocating shell servers with 3 /24's full of useless vhosts just asking to be packeted.

then your saying Rackshack and servermatrix are crappy? RS provides 7 (or 8) ips, but only one is usable until you justify the use of the rest of the IPs you bought.. which isnt right since you 'bought' them in the first place...

And when ordering with SM, you buy 4 IPs, but you can only use 1 and that's all.....And there's a monthly fee for more IPs.... grrr.
