Scroll on 800 x 600

My site looks fine on a monitor with a 1024x768 resolution or higher. However, when you view it on a monitor with a 800x600 resolution, you have to use an annoying horizontal scroll. Here is an example:

Does anybody know if there is a quick fix for this problem?

your buttons are what is causing it and the only way to change it would be to redesign the buttons.

You should make pages that view good in all browsers

I use 778 for the table width if you want it to perfectly fit the page on a 800 by 600 and not have to scroll over. then it views good in all the rest too.

I usually use 700px width, with menu on the right so 640x480 users can view it with only haveing to scroll to use the menu links.

Actually if you want it to fit the page on every browser at 800x600, the max width should be 760. This accounts for 20px on the left for side bars and 20px on the right if you have pages longer than the height (ie. if a vertical scrollbar appears when at 778, a horizontal scrollbar will also appear). Mac browsers also use more on the sides.

edit for size correction

If you want to see what a 800 x 600 resolution will look like with your page, download Browser Master That's what I use. Made my life tons easier!

Hope this helps,

Sara

That, or get Opera... It has a really neat option to display your window size in the Title bar. Makes it real easy to resize your window to specific dimmensions.

And, if you operate a Web Design business, you can get a free license for each of your design workstations to rid yourself of the nag banners.

If you are using fixed width 760pixels wide is generally the accepted width.

Another very helpful way to see what your site will look like in the different resolutions is by using Favelets (if you use IE). It's javascript in a "link" form that you put in your favorites bar and can click on to activate.

Among them are the different screen sizes (640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, etc) plus it has HTML and CSS validators which are very handy too. All you do is bring up the site in question and click on the Favelet, it will resize your browser window to what it would be if it were at that resolution ... very easy.
