How does remote reboot work?

This must be a simple question to some people. How does it work? Does it work even if the server is completely down? Does it work with Windows? Do I need to modify the system to support it?

Thanks

Pretty simple. Basically, it is a piece of hardware that plugs into a motherboard's reboot wires. It also has a network connection. Usually, it will have its own IP where a remote user can just connect to the IP through some sort of gateway (Web or SSH) and issue a command to reboot the fallen server.

very simply, it turns the power completely off and turns it back on. Your machines BIOS must support "power on after power failure" which will know that when the apc turns the power back on, the machine will restart back up
