Co-location for gameservers

If I get a quarter rack with a 10Base-T unmetered connection, will it be enough or must I get a 100Base-T one? (If I plan to run mainly HLDS servers)

Should be more than enough.

It depends on how many games you run.

16 x 30Kbits per player = 480 Kbits at peak.
50 games, all full requires 24 Meg of connectivity.

Find a provider offering 95th percentile if you are going to be pushing this much bandwidth, I'm assuming that your gameservers won't be full 24/7, therefore if you use 95th, it'll save you some money in the long run

10mbit unmetered, in the end, you are paying a flat fee for 10mbit , per mbit, most likely fairly close to the same fee you could pay per mbit *somewhere* (if nowhere else but cogent)

Try and get a burstable 100Mb connection, this way you got room to expand expecially during peak periods.

Game servers are a trickey beast. Your much better off buying by the meg than a flat 10M port.

The hard part is finding high quality bandwidth at a fair price. If there are any network disturbances anywhere between the server and your clients they are going to 'feel' it. Pings alone are not always enough to see a bad network or route.

Our 1/4 rack game server clients use between 3-10 megs, usually they start with 1M and get machines racked, then ramp up bandwidth as they sell service.

1/4 rack is typical for a established game provider, while people new to the business we usually see start with one machine and 1Mbps bandwidth. Make sure you don't over extend yourself or your setting yourself up to fail. If your buying 1/4 rack and 10M, you should be at the point where your using it all.

Get enough bandwidth for half of your servers being full - then just pay the extra when it goes over. (95% or whateveR)

Which region? Depending on where the most of your players are, decides which region you should be in....will decide in which colo can offer you the best ping times.
