Question

Why no slackware?

I keep seeing hosts offer FreeBSD or Redhat for their dedicated machines, but why not Slackware?

Slackware hasn't been popular for several years.

RH has essentially dominated the North American Linux market.

Slackware is basically a very "BSD-like" Linux distro. Support has been spotty at best over the last few years.

I like Slack. It's a nice distro but it isn't FreeBSD - not even close.

I'm sure if you search hard enough you'll find someone that offers it. You are always free to colo your own server with the OS of your choice.

Colo is a good option if you want slack. Also, Serverbeach offers Debian.

I think it's an issue of hosting companies not wanting to support every distro under the sun. There are a lot fewer places to get Gentoo (eww ) or Debian (yay!) servers as well.

There are a few Slackware hosts around, though. Just gotta look hard.

I'm a Slackware user too. I've converted 3 RackShack servers from RH 7.3 to Slackware 9.0. It's really not that hard to do. I've been thinking about writing up a little HOWTO...

We offer slackware but you have to ask about it. We don't advertise it. I'm sure if you asked other companies they would load it for you also.

Debian is literally a POS. Any debian users I've known who have agreed to try Gentoo...never looked back. It's like switching from windows to Mac or Linux. It's that big of a difference.

We use Debian for all of our company servers, apart from Ensim, which uses RH. We've just started using a Knoppix-based desktop OS (off HDD, not CD-ROM) for a few of our workstations.

Don't let a few of the bigger companies put you off. We have plenty of Slackware, FreeBSD, Debian servers etc - infact, they out number the RH servers our clients have by quite a bit. Maybe it's just down to the type of client each company attracts.
