Name Server help needed!!

I have set up my name servers on my server but when I go to point the domain name to the name servers and ips I get and error saying no records of the name server there for it can not be used as a name server.

So after reading a few post on here about name servers I understand that you have to register your name servers with NetSol. My question is when you buy your name.com do they not register it as a name server or is registering name servers a separate thing? Also How long dose it take to have a name server registered and active?

Any and all info on name servers would be geat help to me.

thx. PSL.

Registering domains and nameservers are two separate procedures. Once you've added the NSes to NetSol, give them 12-36 hours maximum for other servers to recognise and update their DNS databases.

Others will have relevant resources or correct me on the timing....

nameservers

You don't need to register your nameservers anywhere - theyll be recognised after you use them for a domain, - all you need is the domain you use for them to be registered.
Ive got numerous nameservers running and have never registered one yet.
Ive found that after about 14 hours DNS changes are usually active.

Where are you getting the errors ? at some registry site ?

PSL, try this: go to http://www.opensrs.org; directnic is an openSRS reseller. On the left border on that page, find the link to "Manage your domain." Use the same username and password that you use at DirectNIC. You'll be able to register your nameservers there. My experience, though, is that while I've done that successfully, if I change the nameservers for a domain that way DirectNIC seems to change them back. So, I'd just register the nameservers and then go back to DirectNIC to set them for whatever domains you want them to serve.

Or, you could put in a support ticket at DirectNIC and ask them!

Name Servers

PHP im afraid your wrong you do have to register the domain name as a name server after registering at as a name. To see whether a domain name is registered as a name server do a whois with the "host" command.

Nope - I just set a couple up a few days ago and then changed the name servers for a domain at network solutions to them and didn't register the nameservers anywhere.

Some registrars make you enter nameservers you want to use and do checks on them but that is not registering a nameserver.

Name Server reg

WHo ever you register through must make the name servers for you or it must be a automated process, but normally with most registers you do have to register it as a host through Network SOlutions

NetworkSolutions should register a domain themselves through an OpenSRS registrar just so they can see how easy it *could* be to manage one's domains. From registration to nameserver creation, OpenSRS's system is completely intuitive.

It isn't that NetSol doesn't work. We all know "it" does. I just tried to register nameservers for a domain I already (apparently) had nameservers for. DOH! This is my fault, but with OpenSRS's system, it would have displayed the nameservers already associated with the domain, which I could then change easily.

I can't wait until all of my domains are off NetSol. I know that you retain credit for unused months if you transfer to another registrar, but does anyone know if you still get this credit when you have a year and 1/2 left? I wouldn't mind transferring the domain and losing this, but at the same time, would like retain those 1 1/2 years. Not sure if there is a limit, or if it doesn't much matter.

I know if you transfer your domains to directnic that you will retain the time left on your registration at other registrars. Therefore if you still have 1 1/2 years left at your current registrar for a particular domain then you will not lose this time. You will however have to register the domain for a minumum of 1 year to transfer it to directnic (giving you essentially 2 1/2 years), which I think is completely reasonable.

Here is directnic's policy on that:

Chicken,

Current ICANN regulations require the new registrar to add the existing time to the transfer but I have seen some registrars that do not. I know any OpenSRS reseller will.

Last I checked, DirectNIC did not give you the username/password you needed to manage the domain directly with OpenSRS.

Scottlaw,

I just logged in to OpenSRS's "Manage Your Domain" using my directnic username and password and it worked fine.

Why would you want to though? (other than for registering your nameservers) Directnic's contol panel does everything if not more than the OpenSRS control panel. I find it much easier to admin my domains from one simple interface then to log in at OpenSRS for each and every domain.
