P4 server power usage?

Hi guyz

I am looking to colo at HE facility. They are running a special promo but they are only allowing 15amps of power per rack. I am just wondering how many P4 servers can 15amps accomodate??

I measured it once before. A P4 2.4ghz, with 1 HDD, 1 GB ram, consumes 0.63amps at idle, and jumps to around 1.3 when it's doing something.

In addition to Mfjp, a server may consume twice as much power of its normal operation when it starts up.

what kind of rack is it?
How many server can a rack accomodate ?

The more server a rack will accomodate, the more power you'll need. Generally 15-20 amps should be enough to run 20 P4 servers. (rough estimates) However just remember the more hardware you have (more disk drives & multiple procs), the more likely you are to run into power problem

rey,

Startup is at 2.2amps right at power on. So be careful and start your servers one by one, or you'll have a blow circuit breaker.

it depends a bit on the hardware, no of drives etc, but *generally* they idle at a little below 1 and peak at 2.5 at post/powerup

in 16A you can comfortably run 20 pieces of kit - servers/switches/screens etc

make sure you set them on delayed startup through something like an APC masterswitch - otherwise in the event of power fail, when restored they all fire up at the same time and blow your pdu's / trip out your circuits.

We tend to find we run out of power before we run out of space in the racks

20 P4 servers on one 15 amp curcuit is asking for problems. We were able to fit about 12 P4 (some dual Xeon) servers to a 20 amp circuit before it was at capacity (80%) load. You will likely need between 40 and 60 amps to fill a cab completely.

othellotech - let me guess - your in Redbus?

Redbus has got major power issues - which is why we stayed away! Way too cheap imo.

All of our racks in telehouse are fullup with 1U servers - most of them with scsi - and we havent had any issues with power. Once i stupidly plugged the power into a new rack - 40 servers powered on without any problems!

yup we're in Redbus and very happy, most racks have 8a, some have dual-feed so 16a, the thread starter asked about power usage so i gave some examples

wub - you not running apc units for remote reboot ? they have a habit of frying if you powerup all the sockets simultaneously - lost a few snmp management cards that way - have them each on a 5 sec incrementing delay now

20 machine on 15 amps??? Are we on 230V 15amps circuit?

On 110V AC, it needs close to 40amps to power a full rack.

Because you're using 240V and we use 110V in the US, and you need allowances for simultaneously powering the servers on, as well as simultaneous load.
