Hosts-How may websites/GB for resellers?

Hi,

Hope it's o.k. to post this question here. Figured you guys are the ones who would know.

What do you suggest is a good average number of websites/GB for resellers, and still keep good uptime & speed? I know there are lots of variables, but if you could give me your experiences & advice, I'd much appreciate it.

Thanks,

Karen

off topic,

I love the concept of your site

In answer to your question i currently have over 91 domains/websites on a 4GB/40GB reseller plan, of which i would say 50 are actual websites and the rest parked domains, the uptime and speed is excellent, but then i am with a great company, hope that info helps.

I think it would depend on who you are are with as a reseller company. Each reseller company (top) has diffrent equipment which could make a change on how many people you can host.

Well there are many variables as you already know. There really is no set amount for a reseller account when it comes to site/GB. However, you don't want too many websites on one server as this will cause problems and slow down speed etc. HTML only websites don't take up as much in the resource department as say sites with a forum or php scripts etc would.

Most hosts often stick to a rate when offering accounts. Usually 1 GB per 50 or 100 MB is often very fair, you can always offer more or less depending on who you want to target.

I hope that helped a little, please let me know if I can be of anymore service Karen.

Crazytech makes a couple of good points, it does depend on the type of website and the resources they use, every single one of mine are html, not 1 single script etc, in addition all accounts are only 50mb with each website only taking up 2 or 3 mb, i am sure if i stuck a heavy script on there it would be noticeable.
The variables do make a difference, i have one simple philosophy which is i make sure i stay within my account limits even when dividing up the accounts, no overselling as an example, not that i disagree with controlled overselling.
As long as you manage your account properly there should be no problem.

First jablunka, thank you for the compliment. It's my little experiment & I hope it does well--for the students & myself! I also hope they all need websites..hehe.

Secondly, you are going to crack up when you see the reseller plan I have right now...

http://StarvingStudentWebsites.com

Look familiar? LOL!

Right now the "advanced power partner" is an affiliate link to the host I'm on right now & am terribly unhappy with. This is where I will link to, hopefully, my own hosting plans.

Thank you so much everyone for all of the great & quick responses! This is an awesome forum. Glad I found you.

One more question (for now)...I'm bad at math...I'm going to be a decent lawyer--who hires an accountant! Anyway, isn't 1000MB equal to 1GB? Then if you figure 50 sites per GB (and I know it really depends on all the variables), that figure still assumes the average site uses about 20MB. And, of course, they normally wouldn't. Mine, without the classified program (php/MySQL), is only about 1MB.

So, that is where the leeway comes in, to keep the speed decent, etc., right?

One more dumb question--and if I need to post this in another area, please let me know--but, what affects "bandwidth" and why the different amounts of "transfer?" I'm assuming whenever data is transferred, it taxes the server?

Thanks for putting up with me. I'm really learning a lot (although, I'm really supposed to be studying contract law right now...)

LOL esquirette, even i wouldnt use them, but i sure sell a lot of domains thru them,

Not too sure about hosting 50 sites on 1GB though, that would leave you with little leeway, but like you say it depends on the sites,

You are spot on with the bandwidth, it is all about transfer.

Others will no doubt give you more concise answers but the above is basically it.
