Raq not responding anymore
I have a strange problem with my Raq4, and I have no clue what could be the reason for it. Sporadicly, about every 4 or 5 days, my server stops responding entirely, I can't connect to no services at all. However, from the logs I can see that the server is actually still up running, and hasn't crashed, besided that the logs haven't any unusual entries. After a reboot the server is running fine again.
What could be the reason for that?

Have you tried access the site via IP address ? If that works then chances are the DNS server is acting up. Have your web host perform a check on the machine.

It's not an DNS issue, I already checked that.

It could be failing hardware or misconfigured something. Was there anything installed recently right before this problem occurred ?

I bought the box (Raq3) used, and a friend of mine upgraded it to Raq4 OS, 40 GB HD, and 512 MB RAM. The problems actually occured from the beginning, but very sporadicly, sometimes with more than a week without any problems.
However, after you mentioning possible hardware problems, I checked the kernel log a bit more carefully, and found the following:
Quote:
Sep 2 07:51:37 www kernel: portmap: RPC call returned error 111
Sep 2 07:51:37 www kernel: RPC: task of released request still queued!
Sep 2 07:51:37 www kernel: RPC: (task is on xprt_pending)
Sep 2 07:51:37 www kernel: portmap: RPC call returned error 111
Sep 2 07:51:37 www kernel: RPC: task of released request still queued!
Sep 2 07:51:37 www kernel: RPC: (task is on xprt_pending)
Sep 2 07:51:37 www kernel: lockd_up: makesock failed, error=-111
Sep 2 07:51:37 www kernel: portmap: RPC call returned error 111
Sep 2 07:51:37 www kernel: RPC: task of released request still queued!
Sep 2 07:51:37 www kernel: RPC: (task is on xprt_pending)

Could that be the possible problem, or is this nothing to worry about?

Not sure. I would have thought that there is something in the hardware which prevents the RaQ3 to RaQ4 upgrade but I am not sure. Have you tried reinstalling the RaQ3 OS and see if it works.

No, and since I haven't the box in a datacentre, and not here, this would be pretty diificult, and work I would like to prevent, I'm already running a lot of sites on the box...
Any idea about other diagnostic possibilities on this?
And what does the error message actually mean?

No idea there. You got to get a Linux expert at that.

Just a wild stab in the dark but i had a similar problem my dev RAQ here at work, was shutting down on it's own. Turned out to be a dodgy fan.

RaQ4 OS on RaQ3 is certainly not the issue. The hardware is identical.
Heat (fan) could be a problem.
Are you on a Cisco 1900 series switch? That could be a problem too. Ask your provider.

If it would be a heat isue, wouldn't there be any heat warning entries in the logs?

I had an issue with this as well on two seperate machines.
First one was a heat issue and fixed the first case when I fixed the fan.
Second issue was a bit tougher to identify, but was solved by starting the portmapper before trying to mount any NFS filesystems.
Regardless of the error, the messages should be harmless and should not cause the issues you reported in your initial post.
Have you noticed any other problems with the server at all?

One more thing, although it may not be the case, do a check to make sure no one has compromised your machine.
Newsgroups and other message boards are riddled with people who have posted the same lines of a problem that you are having and found that it is because someone has added additional rpms to their machine.
A quick check only takes a few minutes and can't help in identifying the problem.
