How much technical knowledge is important for reselling? I am more concerned about providing customer support...can I boot the technical stuff upstairs to the hier tiered host?

Your provider should be able to answer your questions and in turn, you can answer your customer's questions.

thanks for your thoughts. do any resellers just focus on the customer service end, and refer technical questions out? Or are they really just the go-between?
thanks again!

I think technical knowledge is very important for a reseller. Of course you don't need to know everything.
You can pass some difficult level questions to your host and then respond your client.
But if you have a client with a basic technical issue and you know nothing about how to answer and think 'What is he talking about?' Well, you better start another kind of business and not webhosting.
Being a reseller is a compromise with your clients. They are going to pay you and you have to support them as long as you can.

Osckar is correct, you will need to know many basic level technical know-how.
However, you will always be able to pass questions up one level to your host.
But remember to pay close attention to your hosts' responses. That is the best way to learn! Also, you may ask your host from time to time for a guide to fixing an issue you are not capable of fixing. This way, you'll be able to handle it in the future.

Greetings:
One of the better reasons for going with a reseller plan than a dedicated server is that if you pick the right provider, they will be your technical resource.
That doesn’t necessarily mean they will be a direct technical point of contact for your clients.
However, the better providers will not put you on a timer every time you call their toll free number of count the emails you send.
They will work with you to help you market your business, grow your technical knowledge, and help you thrive.
Thank you.

You should be able to atleast talk to your provider about technical issues.
Having said that, you are paying for a reseller acount the technical requirements of keeping your server up and stable utimately is up to your povider. However since you are re-selling you must be able to perform basic administrative functions pertaining to email / web server and simple DNS functions.
If you have a good company you can work with - chances are you can ask them questions when you run into trouble.
