co-lo server questions.

I am in the process of picking out a server(s) to co-locate, I thought i was decided on the xeon dual 2.4ghz but now the new Opterons came out and i am back a square one again...

I will be running game servers with the new machines and would like to get a few opinions on which setup would be better.

Option #1
Dual 2.4ghz Xeon 533mhz FSB

Option #2
Opteron 240 1.4ghz 800mhz FSB 1mb Cache

Also the ram must be ECC? or can i use regular Kingston 512mb PC2700 since i have a few sticks laying around..

Any help choosing would be greatly appreciated

I'd go with Xeons+ECC RAM. The Xeons are a bit more time-tested, and IIRC they have much faster performance than the Opterons at this point. The main benefit to the Opterons is the ability to address more than 4GB RAM, but if you're just doing a gaming server, that's not really necessary.

Make sure your Xeons have HyperThreading and you'll be a happy camper.

BTW, if you haven't already talked to RackmountsEtc on AIM about the price of that server, make sure you do. His prices are extremely low, considering how hgh-quality the servers are.

HTH!

I'll second that on RackmountsEtc, I've purchased numerous servers from him

If you can afford, get a Supermiro dual Xeon. It is worth every penny...
