Got this from Liquid Web today about cPanel
It's been a long, long time since I posted here but immediately thought of this forum when I got some news from Liquid Web about the cPanel price increase and their plans for their customers.
I pay for VPS hosting for mostly hobby and nonprofit sites and don't make much revenue from them. I do it more as a hobby and don't keep up with cPanel announcements so this news came as a surprise. I personally think cPanel's decision is going to lead to less revenue for them as hosts will turn to solutions that Liquid Web is moving forward with.
Hello,
On June 27th, 2019 cPanel announced a significant change to their pricing structure.
A quick explanation of the situation: Currently, cPanel is licensed per server. With the new pricing structure, cPanel will license per cPanel account and per server, which results in a significant price increase, not only for us, but for our customers.
cPanel’s announcement came as a shock to us, and this dramatic change has caught the entire hosting industry by surprise. While incremental price increases are expected from providers from time to time, this sudden and dramatic pricing increase has put businesses of all sizes in a difficult position.
The rates mentioned in the cPanel blog post are the cost for providers like Liquid Web and on average represent a 40% increase. While the cPanel 2019 pricing varies by server type, customers can expect to see a 25%-50% increase on average, and in cases where customers have >100 accounts, it could be a 100%+ price increase.
cPanel price changes for Liquid Web customers due to this vendor rate increase will be effective on January 1, 2020.
We are pleased to announce that Liquid Web now owns a competing control panel, Interworx, that will allow our customers to avoid the price increase altogether. And, because of the uncertainty that cPanel’s pricing has introduced into the control panel market, Liquid Web will be providing a price lock guarantee that ensures that the Interworx price will not increase for 3 years from January 1, 2020.
On the market for nearly 20 years, the Interworx Hosting control panel is feature-rich like cPanel and has an intuitive user interface for managing servers and for end users to oversee the operations of their websites. InterWorx has thousands of licenses in production and we expect to add thousands of additional production licenses in the upcoming months.
What happens next:
Our assumption is that most customers will want to avoid a price increase of any kind, and we will be working with you to migrate to the Interworx control panel. Migrations to InterWorx will happen over the next several months and you will be given ample notice and more details on what to expect in the upcoming weeks. We are working hard on the process and automation to reduce customer impact.
Of course, should you wish to remain on cPanel, you can certainly do so. Your current pricing on existing servers will remain unchanged until 1/1/2020 when the new cPanel pricing tiers will go into effect at Liquid Web. Should cPanel raise their pricing in future years, you should expect that Liquid Web will be forced to pass on those increases as well.
If you are a WordPress or WooCommerce user, this may be the time for you to check out Liquid Web’s Managed WordPress and Managed WooCommerce solutions which provide simple management dashboards allowing customers to abstract themselves from server administration altogether.
We’re pleased to be able to add Interworx for our customers while also continuing to offer cPanel as a fully-managed control panel option, including the same level of full server support by the Most Helpful Humans in Hosting®
We’ll continue to keep you posted on this topic via our ticketing system and our blog. Stay tuned!

Now I just need to find a billing system that integrates with Interworx so I can replace WHMCS and I'm good to go...

Thanks for that link, looks like Blesta has my payment processor and domain registrar as well. I'm going to have to trial that.

Yeah it was ok, but support was lacking.
Plus Interworx doesn't have official CloudLinux support and a few other things such as not being able to set outbound limits for email which you need when running shared hosting.
The idea was good though.
We ended up going with a solution built on Microsoft Azure as we have a pretty broad mix of customers from non profits to small businesses and more Corporate organisations.
Dumped CPanel as frankly it gets in the way a bit particularly with setting up DNS and such, we actually now have much more redundancy built in to our hosting platform as a result as not everything is sitting on the one server.
With Cpanel everything is all installed on the one server.CPK Web Services

Ah, I was taking your statements as wanting to get away from cpanel and the people behind them whom also own WHMCS as have seen others state else where. But if that isn't the case, yup WHMCS will work fine and modulesgarden has an extended interworx module for WHMCS that provides a lot of the user side functions within WHMCS.

Having managed Interworx servers over the years, it's a pretty simple control panel that lacks a lot of important features, integrations and functionality. I'm glad LW is doing what they are and own the control panel now as I despise what cPanel did but I hope they invest in improving Interworx as this is the time to do it.

Wow the biggest news here would be this "Liquid Web now owns a competing control panel, Interworx," I don't see anything about that on Interworx site!

Not just that, but they also removed lifetime pricing! I didn't notice until someone mentioned to me that lifetime licenses had disappeared and that they had redone their licensing... and sure enough, when I checked they did.
I have not heard anything from InterWorx about being bought out. Really unhappy with how this was handled and is leaving a really bad taste in my mouth.

The downside to Interworx is that they refuse to use modern backend software. They use djbdns, qmail and such and have refused requests to support other solutions for years. I used Interworx for a number of years, and, while it worked, investigating issues with e-mail and supporting new/current DNS and e-mail standards was a problem. That's kept me from going back to them in this cPanel fiasco. I'm still looking for alternatives.

Blesta is a replacement for WHMCS. It's priced at less than $20/mo if you choose to go that route and works well. I wonder if I should try their Proxmox integration again.. (Yes, I run Proxmox on my servers.)

These are very fair points. For the last several years Interworx's development has been focused in other areas but with the recent changes in the market we are making an investment in fixing some legacy issues (including, specifically, djbdns and qmail among others).
We will be releasing a Q4 and Q1 roadmap later this month to address this and other issues.
