    Looking for a new host!

Hello WHT! Long time viewer here and finally ready to build my first website! I just wanted to see everyone's opinions on some hosting companies I've searched for and came up with a few.

I'm closing in on my options with HawkHost and see they offer unlimited diskspace... but i'm thinking to myself how can it be unlimited if there is no such thing as unlimited hard drives? doesn't seem right and it just seems they are taking the EIG/HostGator/Bluehost approach by overselling the servers and when someone uses a lot of resources they get shut down and they're forced to upgrade. I also see this other host (stablehost.com) but been reading a lot of bad reviews recently

I also found Steadyio.com but don't see any reviews so I'm guessing they're new. I like the fact they offer 10 GB diskspace for 2.50/m with coupon for unlimited websites. can't beat that. and finally there's crochost.com which seems popular but from what I understand servers are in Canada, and have to sign up for a 3 year term to get good pricing

Anybody have experience or signed up with Steadyio?

Many hosting providers are going with the "unlimited" route where they do not limit the disk space that you can use as long as the disk space are used for your website contents and not for data storage. You should check their Terms of Service (TOS) for the limitations.

As for using a lot of resources, most providers nowadays will have a set limit of resources like CPU and RAM and your account may be throttled/limited (which will slow down loading speed) when you hit your limits. The hosting provider should include details of this upfront so you will know what you are getting.

Don't know anything about steadyio but will like to give you one suggestion if you go with the cheap price like $2.5 per month for unlimited or single website then these provider are over-selling there server. As recently Cpanel has hiked there prices which affected many companies to increase the price or shift to another control panel like DirectAdmin, ISPConfig etc.
If you need my suggestion for host then i can recommend knownhost.com and jonesolutions.com

belive me, if they don't limit the HDD space they will limit you somehow anyway, read carefully the TOS, real UNLIMITED doesn't exist.

You got it right there are no such thing as "unlimited hard drives". I'll think about choosing a better reliable host.

    Hey Ron,

A lot of hosts use different terms, 'unlimited', 'worry-free', 'unmetered', in the end, they all really mean the same thing, i.e. you're on shared hosting and when you're sharing, resources are never really unlimited are they ;-)?

That said, you'll usually get enough to build a basic website. But if you start getting a lot of hits and traffic, the company will definately reach out to you and tell you to upgrade to the next tier to get more resources on the shared server.

What type of site are you building? If you're building an e-store, it's always a good idea to really understand what each host really means by 'unlimited' because you don't want your shoppers dropping off and going to your competitors because of resource restrictions, that's money out of your pocket!

Beware of those false advertizements. Resources are not unlimited and disk space is not unlimited. They gonna limit you if you use too much.

Hawkhost may show that they give unlimited space, but there support and hosting is very good. The file transfer between the server and PC is super fast. I used them one month and i was highly satisfied with them.

For large companies unlimited mean average usage (you can google / duckduckgo / wht search that) account is unlimited but should not go over the average of that other unlimited users are using... some of the big companies even got tools for that

With my business partner we even joked that if you sell $3 and $7 unlimited at some point you got to tell you customer that it is over average for the $3 unlimited that he/she got to update from the smaller unlimited to the bigger unlimited

P.S. I'm silently lurking here from years... So I can told you how HawkHost ended with unlimited... It was the StableHost guy that introduce that idea that if you want to be big player you should use offer unlimited as the average customer do not know how much space and bandwidth will need and will always choose unlimited ... so some of the well known here host followed ... So how this ended for him?.... (he sold business to the bigger than him player maybe unlimited make the sale easier - I do not know - I hope the money are good will be happy for him if they are enough for retirement )

I hosted with Stablehost for 10 years. Today marks 10 years completed and also a day when I moved my site to different host. My plan was 20GB one, but I never used more then 1GB. Surprisingly after cleaning trash section in cpanel before taking back up to upload at new host's cpanel - tgz file was 200mb only. Unzipped it and it was little over 600MBs.

So, unlimited is a word which you will be attracted but you should always pay attention to CPU allowances, RAM, No of processes etc. With saying that, I am very lucky as I had good experience with them, some hadn't, after he sold it to Miss Group, speed was down about 5-10% not much and that too every now and then. Never needed a Support but just felt it's time to try something new, and I needed little more cpu allowance as occasionally it spiked 100% there.

To unlimited disk space or not to unlimited disk space. Average users utilize 5gb or less disk space. Never heard of steadyio, others have good reviews and been around quite a while.

I'll miss the xVarnish too (combined with mod_lsapi) it was faster that LiteSpeed of that time for basic WP setups ...

Any way with the average usage unlimited it is just an idea, but it will be a shameful moment (for me at least) when you got to explain to a customer that he/she got to upgrade from smaller unlimited to bigger unlimited due to disk usage ...

Totally agree. Try explaining different levels of unlimited your prospects or clients. It makes no sense whatsoever.

Our unlimited plans just like any other web host out there is about giving a user the peace of mind. You're not worried about things breaking on a site because you had a 20GB plan and you hit 21GB for a few minutes. That being said we also utilize a software defined storage system (Storpool) in many of our locations now and we are not limited to just a single server with a few drives.

Glad to hear you're satisfied thus far and we hope you continue to be so.

We ran an unlimited hosting brand many years before we ever offered it on Hawk Host. We never advertised it on WHT because it was not allowed. The WHT rules changed which allowed Hawk Host and many others to now advertise unlimited hosting. It was not something StableHost did that made us change our hosting plan allocations.

I think I read that discussion and noticed that some times later you change, Maybe I got the wrong perception from the story... Best luck from me you are one of the companies I'm checking to set my watch, the others 2 that was interesting to follow here are already sold to big players (StableHost and Arvixe) I wish best luck to everyone
