Polish and Russian domains

Next to the common extentions such as .com.pl , .pl , .com.ru and .ru , there are lot of sites that use domains such as .prv.pl , .w.pl , .narod.ru and .om.ru

Does anyone know if these are real domains, or just redirections offered by local companies ?

Is an address in Poland / Russia required for such a domain ?

Hi,

You will find information about .pl domain registration here.

The content of the registration form you will find there suggests that applications from outside Poland should be accepted. There is also a credit card payment option so you should have all you need.

If you need more information, PM me.

So .w.pl and .prv.pl are regional domains but authorized by DNS.pl and thus have the same protection as a regular .pl ? They are not just redirections ?

Using NASK's terminology, .prv.pl is a functional domain (full list here.
I do not think there is a w.pl domain available.

In addition, you have a long list of regional domains.
And yes, they are domains administered by NASK - the .pl domain authority, not redirects.

What you will get is a e-mail or URL forwarder (e.g. gerrit@gerritdomain.w.pl to whatever address). This is a free service but you will need to “re-activate” it every 90 days.

argh... redirections are mainly interesting if they don't disappear after x days of inactivity. Like the eu.org subdomains

Poland is the first country I see that has official "regional" domains (.waw.pl = Warszawa)

Do you have to live in this region to register such a domain, or can foreigners do as well ?

In fact it's weird no other countries introduced it. NIC.US can only sell 1 .us of each domain, but if every state would sell its domain they could sell 51 of them !

For example : sports.us
sports.tx.us
sports.ca.us
sports.mi.us
etc

Belgium could have 4
.fl.be = Flanders (Dutch speaking region)
.wal.be = Wallony (French speaking region)
.bxl.be = Brussels (bilingual capital region)
.de.be = German speaking region

suggestion for DNS.BE ?

The .pl domain is managed by NASK - Scientific and Academic Computer Network - so perhaps some smart people put their brains to work to create that unique system. I agree, it is neat.

To the best of my knowledge, everybody can register such a domain, also foreigners. There is a registration form in English on NASK's site now.

I'm not sure if managing the DNS for such a domain would be equally easy. It will probably be a good idea to use a third party DNS service.

False.
prv.pl is domain owned by one company which can give you free alias. This domain is not owned by NASK (Polish domains registrar)

Sorry, my mistake. priv.pl is one of the functional domains.
