Ummmm, I was just looking at vBulletin (as I have before) to install on my site, and am I wrong that vBulletin used to be free to use? I always had it in my mind that it was free... hmmmm.

WebHostingTalk.Com does not make any money, there are no advertisements or sponsorship. VBulletin costs $160 (inc 1 year of updates, each year after that is $30, which is yet to be seen since you can't buy upgrades in advance), plus on top of that the hosting at HostingMatters in not free and it looks like we're gonna go over of bandwidth allowance, plus other expenses. HostInvestigator does make some money but we are not accepting new advertisements until our new site is up....

SysAdmin,

Since this forum has alot of hits, if you put a 1 banner ad like from Flycast or something, you could make some bucks helps to pay for the site.

Question

Well one reason i have liked the place is no ads. Now Matt, I know you have to make some money to cover your expenses, so go ahead i will support your site. I mean I know you can not do things for free. VBullentin is not free, and hotsing plus domain is not either. Are you going to get rid of this domain when you switch servers or something?

admin, your forum indicates that you have about 350+ registered members... and growing daily.

i have two questions i hope you can answer:

a. how much bandwidth does did this forum consume last month?

b. how many hits does this forum get on a daily average?

c. what cpu/ram is your current server running on at hostmatters.com?

Learner

Chicken, just to clarify, vBulletin has two versions much like UBB - a free one (which is stripped down features but is far more customisable than UBB) and the paid licence (either $160/lifetime + $30/year upgrades or $80/year)

Now see, that's what I thought. I went to the site and must have missed the other version but *thought* there was a free version. *Scratches head...

I know I sound like a cheap chicken, but I was just thinking of throwing up a board for the errrr, heck of it, to see what happens. Whooo hooo (I had opened a new browser window while reading your reply), just found it THANKX!

*Could be due to dry scalp

WebHostingTalk.Com will be around for long as I can keep it around, it ain't gonna disappear. Sorry for complaining or confusing anyone. It will continue to be Ad-Free.

Last month bandwidth? I not too sure, but this month it's heading at using 3gb to 4gb.

Hits: Well it reporting at 30,000 per day - which is way wrong. Sessions it's reporting 400 - sounds more like it.

CPU: Wouldn't know. However I'm guessing it a resource hog since (especially showthread.php). I was reading that a 30 post thread (1 page) makes 120 mySQL calls.

SysAdmin not sure if you visit the vbulletin forums but you can reduce the number of mysql calls using the showthread.php optimisation hack at http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showt...?threadid=2774

i installed this hack and it has helped alot... my vbulletin gets around 12000 pageviews/day and it has sped up the showthread process alot

I did have a mess around with information there, but I couldn't get it to work with guest posts. Perhaps you can share you showthread.php, I would be very grateful if you can e-mail it to admin@webhostlink.com
