What version of windows is she using?
If it's 98 you can usually see the type of modem when it goes through the bios during start up. You have to be quick though, it only show for a couple of seconds.
You can also go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information and click on the Components/Modem button. That may tell you the type of modem.
Otherwise you may need to have a look inside the box for a serial number.

You also need to install some drivers from motherboard.
without them (probably never installed if you haven't had a modem) Win98 will not see your modem.

From the CD with all motherboard drivers.
Or from Internet, if you know exactly what type of motherboard you have.

Download and install Belarc Advisor.
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
Run it and it will tell you everything on the system.
Type the modem info into Google and do a search to find the company that makes it.
Download and install the drivers for it.
If it still doesn't work, get another modem. That one may not work.
Also check to make sure the modem is seated properly.Laura K.

Hi, Better get some local tech help to sort out your problem. Call up the nearest hardware store or ISP provider and ask them if they will come over and assist you.
I had similar problems when I first started using the internet. I bought my assembled system from a friend who didnt mind paying a visit to help me out.....all it cost me was a few beers
